Finding allies - interactions designer

Designer tools are universal, no matter the content. What we want is to follow a serie of steps that feed a process, in this case, elements that work in the context given.

A course was born - Abyssal Expedition: interventions from the deep-sea

Design challenge:

Translate deep-sea related realities into communication pieces

Start point: seniors designers without deep-sea knowledge.

What we have done at Abyssal Expedition classroom:

Conversations about science behind deep-sea discoveries and some deep-sea inspired literature.

Natural history museums and art galleries to observe exhibits curation.

Lectures

Visits to museums

Science and sci-fi talks

Deep-Sea Corals Park, Oceanarium, exploring around with a small ROV, talks with coastal communities.

Artists, deep-sea scientists, museum communicators.

Field trip

Talk with experts

EXPLORATION

'For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about topics related to biology, especially animals. Although, due to life circumstances, I ended up studying design, another one of my greatest callings in life. Interdisciplinary courses like Abyssal Expedition not only make biology more accessible to those outside the field, but also allow people like me, with prior knowledge, to develop projects that shape their professional careers. Thanks to that experience, I understood that it is possible to follow my passions and interests from any area of work..'

Let's focus on who we want to tell the message to

OCTOPUS TIME

Activity Instructions (15 min):Your team is going to create a scketch of an interactive piece that will communicate the message formulated during the Jellyfish Time. To do: 1. Define your user. 3. Brainstorm ideas on how could be this element, how the user will interact with it, what sensory experiences will communicate your message. Don't be afraid of "bad" or "crazy" ideas! Bring in all!

At the beginning, it was frustrating. However, I learned that if we truly want to design for the real world, the piece has to withstand our enthusiasm. Let the user—and how they use it—teach you

SOME LESSONS LEARNED...

  • Collaborations are the key!
  • We rarely have the answers from the start -so we test, adjust, and iterate.
  • Endless possibilities!

3. Social Beings
1. We are visual beings

We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.

We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

4. Digital Beings
2. Narrative Beings

We avoid being part of the content saturation in the digital world.

We tell thousands and thousands of stories. ⅔ of our conversationsare stories.

Coral bleaching

As we approach the loom the previously colored lights change to white. This literally and metaphorically represents when humans get too close to coral ecosystems. We leave traces, represented by the warming of the oceans, which disrupts the symbiosis between the algae associated with corals (which give them color and a food source) and the corals. But not everything is doom and gloom. If we move away for a while, the colors return (the algae), and there may be hope for their survival.

Tip:

Interactivity is the key to capturing the interest and attention of your audience. A genially is interactive because your audience explores and engages with it.
