Complex and Broken Systems

Fast fashion is the rapid production of cheap, trendy clothing that mimics the latest styles and is sold at low prices. It makes fashion more accessible to a wider range of consumers, but on the other side, it creates serious environmental and social problems. The fashion industry is responsible for around 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon emissions each year, about 10% of global emissions and is one of the largest consumers of water. The production process also releases around 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean annually that is equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles, contributing heavily to microplastic pollution. Clothing production uses toxic dyes and chemicals, and most items are produced in bulk under pressure to meet high demand and profit. The workers, most of them women, endure unsafe working conditions, low wages, and long hours. Many of them are underpaid or not paid at all. Once bought, fast fashion items are often worn only a few times before being thrown away which contributes to 92 million tonnes of textile waste each year. In the UK alone, 235 million pieces of clothing were sent to landfills last year. Fast fashion encourages a throwaway culture, damaging both the environment and human dignity.

Have you ever considered how many outfits you have but never or hardly ever worn?Have you ever considered how these clothes were made or who made them? How do your clothes impact the environment?
