WAVES OF CHANGE

One sea connecting us. One network in action. One wave of change.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE?

A CHALLENGE IN 4 SEASONS

WHY THIS CHALLENGE?

GOAL

Driven by the CCM, this challenge brings together the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies of the Mediterranean in protecting our sea, rivers, and coasts, with a commitment to building a cleaner and more sustainable future.
  • JOIN IN YOUR OWN WAY (on the coast, at sea, in a river, etc.)
  • MOBILIZE YOUR COMMUNITY, ENGAGE YOUR VOLUNTEERS, AND BUILD PARTNERSHIPS.
  • MAKE YOUR IMPACT VISIBLE ALONGSIDE OTHER NATIONAL SOCIETIES IN THE REGION TO PROTECT THE MEDITERRANEAN.

WILL YOU JOIN THIS WAVE OF CHANGE?

BECAUSE IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT CLEANING IT’S ABOUT BUILDING NETWORKS, RAISING AWARENESS, AND SHAPING THE FUTURE.

Goal

Act locally to reduce marine pollution from the coast, estuaries, rivers, and wetlands, protecting our Mediterranean Sea and its aquatic ecosystems, which are increasingly vulnerable to climate impact.

Advanced level

Basic level

Intermediate level

Carrying out marine cleanups for the collection of floating or trapped debris in hard-to-reach areas through collaboration with maritime rescue services or local partnerships (only for those National Societies capable of doing so)

  • Perform at least 1 cleaning action per station.
  • Record data in the MARNOBA app.
  • Share photos or videos of the action.
  • Use slogans and hashtags on social media.

Carrying out educational or awareness-raising actions for the general population.

MANDATORY ACTIONS (Adaptable actions)

ADVANCED ACTIONS (optional)

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS (complementary to the mandatory ones)

The sea is cooling down. The ocean currents are more intense. Less human activity on the coasts allows for more technical interventions. What will we do? - Strategic clean-ups in less accessible and technical areas.- Annual impact assessment.

WINTER Assessment and preparation

The water reaches its maximum temperatures. Marine heatwaves. Very intense coastal tourism. Increase in floating debris. What will we do? - Beach and tourist area clean-ups.- Awareness campaigns with tourists and local communities.

SUMMER In full tide

The rains wash away waste from urban areas and rivers. Tourism activity is reactivating. What will we do? - Preventive clean-ups in rivers, wetlands, and estuaries. - Awareness-raising about the link between urban waste and aquatic ecosystems.

SPRING Starts the cycle

Season of torrential rains and cold drop. The storms carry debris from the countryside and cities to the sea. What will we do? - Preventive clean-ups in basins and banks before heavy rains.- Raising awareness about "invisible waste" and its footprint.

AUTUMN After the storm

- Reusable gloves.- Selective waste collection bags.- Portable scale for weighing waste.

PHYSICAL KIT

- General explanatory guide on how to carry out the challenge.- Shared calendar with campaign dates.- MARNOBA app tutorial.

DIGITAL KIT

(provided by the CCM)

(it is required for the NS)

One sea connecting us. One network in action. One wave of change. #wavesofchange - we give visibility to the challenge.- we raise awareness among more people- we unify the voice of all National Societies in the Mediterranean region.

Social media

We share the evolution of the challenge in Mediterranean Climate Action, the CCM's online community. A support and learning network among National Societies of the Mediterranean, where we share results, notable actions, and good practices to multiply the collective impact.

Community on line

Interactive map

Every wave counts, every action adds up.

- Your data will become a virtual wave on a shared collective map.- Interactive visualization of the regional scope of the challenge.- Data available by station to see the evolution and impact.- A network that is strengthening.

WHY DO WE DO IT?

The Mediterranean is one of the most polluted seas in the world: although it occupies less than 1% of the oceans, it concentrates more than 7% of global microplastics. With this challenge:

  • We prevent waste from reaching the sea.
  • We protect marine fauna and biodiversity.
  • We restore essential wetlands in the face of climate change.
  • We mobilize our communities and raise awareness.
  • We reduce invisible emissions of abandoned waste.

MARNOBA APP

WHY USE IT? - It is a free app that allows you to record and categorize marine debris collected during beach or coastal clean-ups. - It helps create an accurate map of marine litter in the Mediterranean.- The data collected through the app contributes to a global citizen science project, amplifying the impact of each local action.- It enables measuring the collective impact of the challenge.

Sustainable Development Goals

  • SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities.
  • SDG 13: Taking climate action.
  • SDG 14: Life below water.
  • SDG 15: Life on land.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the goals.
