Killing and eating anything was out of the question – even a creature as ordinary as a frog can be deadly in the Amazon. One of the smallest species of frog produces enough poison to kill a dozen people, and just touching its skin can leave a person paralysed. Luckily Ghinsberg managed to avoid being savaged or bitten by any of these natural-born killers or squeezed to death by a hungry anaconda. (In this part of South America these snakes regularly grow to more than fifteen feet in length and can weigh over 200 pounds.) He did run into a jaguar, however, but was able to scare it off using insect-repellent spray from his first-aid kit. Overcoming the Amazon’s top predator would reinforce anyone’s heroic self-image, but Ghinsberg’s exhilaration was beginning to falter – travelling alone through such dense jungle was so mentally and physically tough. He almost drowned in a sudden flood, and at least twice he came dangerously close to being sucked into the boggy ground. With no one to haul him out, this could easily have proved fatal.

Loneliness can drain even the strongest person’s spirit, and along with increasing hunger he struggled to find the will to go on. By the end of his second week he was reduced to skin and bone, and blistered feet meant he was barely making any progress. For a couple of days he had some company – he thought a young girl was walking by his side, although this was almost certainly only in his imagination. Eventually, after nearly three weeks, he collapsed to the ground. It was then he had his final piece of good fortune. After losing sight of Ghinsberg at the waterfall Gale had gone for help. He recruited a local boatman and set off back along the river in a dugout canoe to look for his companion. Covering such a huge area the search was long and hard, and nearly three weeks after losing contact with Ghinsberg he was ready to call off the rescue mission and go home. With the aid of the skilled river pilot he’d managed to navigate an impressively long way upstream, but now they were looking for a safe place to turn the boat around before heading back. Incredibly, when they finally found a safe spot to manoeuvre the boat it happened to be right by the stretch of bank where Ghinsberg had collapsed. When Gale spotted him he quickly dragged him onto the boat – his life spared, the two adventurers reunited, and both of them stunned by a miracle that had somehow brought them to precisely the same spot within the vastness of the very largest, most impenetrable rainforest on the planet.

Killing and eating anything was out of the question – even a creature as ordinary as a frog can be deadly in the Amazon. One of the smallest species of frog produces enough poison to kill a dozen people, and just touching its skin can leave a person paralysed.

A) How do the author’s words express the seriousness of the dangers Yossi encountered?

This suggests it would have been unsafe for Yossi to hunt for food. He would have to rely on what he could forage to keep him alive. Yossi is at serious risk of starvation. It also suggests that creatures we normally view as harmless are often lethal in the Amazon.
