Remarkably, Ghinsberg managed to make it back to the surface before his breath was exhausted, but for the next fifteen minutes he was tossed in every direction as the river made its way further down the canyon. He eventually clambered onto the relative safety of the bank, but there was no sign of the raft, which had presumably been smashed to bits in the tumult. He had lost his backpack and supplies too. All he had was what was in his pockets: a little food, a first-aid kit and a small torch. Surprisingly, he hadn’t broken any bones and could find no cuts or bruises. In other words he had cheated death, but he was a long way from anywhere safe. With the raft now gone Ghinsberg was now forced back into the jungle, like the two companions who had disappeared. Travelling by foot was just as hard and dangerous as before, and he was now on his own. Over the coming days food was a constant worry. Without a knife or machete, he ate only fruit which fell from the tall trees and the occasional egg he found in unguarded birds’ nests. He also knew he was at constant risk of infection. His body acted like a magnet to scores of vicious and venomous creatures, and his skin was often covered in bloodsucking leeches or bored into by egg-laying insects. But Ghinsberg felt he had a vital secret weapon – his firm conviction that he would get through this and come out the other side.

Initially, after going over the waterfall, he’d assumed that he and Gale would find each other and then plot a route out of the jungle together. When this didn’t happen it took him a while to realise that they had indeed lost each other. It took several more days to fully appreciate how alone he was. This should have been daunting but instead he found it exciting, the idea that he was experiencing a true-life adventure like the ones he’d read before coming to South America. Instead of seeing himself as a victim of disaster, Ghinsberg began to think of himself as some kind of hero. He felt he was someone who could overcome adversity, and he was determined to do it. He reasoned that people who live their whole lives in the jungle have knives and guns and make fires to cook with. He had nothing but had nevertheless survived so far, and this gave him hope. Admittedly, he had good fortune on his side. He’d gained some experience of wilderness living having spent time with Bedouin tribesmen in the Sinai desert. But the rainforest was very different. Besides its amazing variety of horrible insects and leeches, the Amazon is home to many really dangerous animals. These range from ferocious wild boar to jaguars, and from venomous coral snakes to spiders larger than a man’s hand and heavy as a pack of butter.

A) How does this extract show the theme of survival against the odds?

The odds of surviving a fall over a waterfall are extremely unlikely. This shows survival against the odds because Yossi had not only survived going over a waterfall, but he also survived nearly drowning in the turbulent waters in the raging river.
