Introduction

Hey! We are Ella Toone (Tooney), Nikita Parris (Keets) and Georgia Stanway (G). We’re all professional footballers. Tooney and Keets play for Manchester United, and G plays for Bayern Munich. You might know us if you watched the Women’s European Championship during the summer of 2022 as we were all part of the England squad. This means we are Lionesses. And so are you. You already have the spirit of the Lioness inside you- we all do! This book aims to bring that out of you, helping you find, build and embrace your inner Lioness. Let’s start with a question… Have you noticed that on every England football shirt there are three lions sitting proudly in a crest? And have you ever wondered why lions have been chosen as the country’s symbol? Well, this symbol dates back more than 800 years to the year 1189, when Richard the Lionheart was the king of England. He had three lions on his shield, and this image became so popular that it was copied by other royals for hundreds of years – until eventually, the Football Association (the FA) chose the lions to feature on the country’s kit!

Confession: We didn’t know any of this (none of us were particularly good at history at school!) To be honest, we didn’t even know that the three lions have featured on the shirt of the national team for over 150 years! Symbols aside, one thing we do know is how proud each of us is every time we get to wear three lions on our shirts and represent our country. We were thrilled to find out that over fifty million people tuned in to watch us win the European Championships with the rest of our teammates in the summer of 2022. That was a real high point – lifting that trophy up alongside our best friends – but it hasn’t been an easy journey for any of us. We’ve worked really hard, we’ve had disappointments and setbacks to deal with, and we’ve had the extra challenge of trying to succeed in a sport that has typically been dominated by boys and men. But here we are – European champions – and we want to share our entire journey with you, and hopefully inspire you to go after your goals and be the best at whatever you put your mind to. We want you to know that you are amazing, and with hard work, determination, confidence and resilience, you can reach for your dreams just like we did!
