We predict it’s going to make a any daynow… You can the ball between you and your teammates all day if you’re good enough, but sometimes you need to run at opponents with the ball at your feet. So that’s another reason why we’ve selected dribbling – because it is a part of a team’s attacking options...

What are the two types of dribbling?

Billy: It does, it really does. If you get this one right, you will terrify your opponents. I see it so often: defenders scared out of their mind because a player is running at them with the ball at his feet. Jez: There are two types of dribbling: running with the ball and dribbling with close control.

Finishing

Billy: Finishing is important in football because you win matches by scoring more goals than the other side. Jez: Wow, you’re kidding me. Is that how it works? Mind = blown! I’m going to need to take some time to process this. I can’t even… Billy: But seriously, finishing is so important, because even in the best teams you usually won’t find yourself in a goalscoring position that many times in one match. So it’s vital that when you do, you have the best chance of putting that ball away. That’s what will make you our ultimate footballer. Jez: Yes, it’s that sort of player you want leading the line. Take Harry Kane for example – when he gets in a goalscoring position you back him to tuck it away, don’t you? He talks a lot about mental strength – he says you have to be ‘brave’ and keep a ‘level head’. Billy: Same with Mo Salah. And he says that if you want to improve your finishing then you need to spend a lot of time upfront. When he was asked why his finishing rate increased at Liverpool, he said the answer was simple: ‘I play closer to the goal than any club before.’

Jez: In the modern game, if you look at the elite players, it seems like everyone can use their weaker foot. One-footed players just aren’t accepted anymore. Billy: Christian Eriksen told us that when he was younger he would consciously use his weaker left foot. He just used it over and over until he was comfortable with it. He made it a strength. It’s important to work on this yourself too. Jez: That is good advice, people. So here’s some more. You should watch the goalkeeper’s position and see if they’ve left too much of a gap. If so, tuck that ball away pronto. Keep your eyes on the ball as you hit it and make sure you’re gone for the right technique – from the tap-in to the powerful thump, there are lots to choose from. Stay cool and calm, whichever you go for. The most successful finishers are those who can remain composed in the heat of the battle. Billy: That’s right Jez. The best finishers are those who come alive in that moment. The ones who thrive on the pressure of turning a chance into a goal.

Practise & Apply

1) Jez: Wow, you’re kidding me. Is that how it works? Mind = blown! I’m going to need to take some time to process this. I can’t even… What impression does Jez give about how he feels about what Billy said? Do you think he really means this?

Acceptable Answers:

  • Jez gives the impression that he is shocked and is hearing something new that he has never known before.
I don’t think he really means this because:
  • he is being sarcastic, not serious – he already knows that you win by scoring goals, so he is pretending to be surprised
  • throughout the book he has been a football expert
  • Mind = blown! and I can’t even… suggest he is making fun
  • he does not really need time to process it because it is obvious
  • he uses short exclamations and questions to exaggerate his shock
