David Bowie

SINGER-SONGWRITER Born – 1947, England Died – 2016, United States

Little David didn’t care about fitting in with the crowd. In the tiny house in London where he grew up, his older brother Terry played him jazz and rock music. David would spend hours listening to records – he was so inspired by what he heard that he started dreaming up ideas that were out of this world. Sometimes David’s schoolteachers weren’t sure if he was a boy or a girl, but David wasn’t bothered about what other people thought. He believed in his own expression, unique to anyone else. He had a real talent for singing and mastered many instruments – and his dance moves were from another planet!

After leaving school, David began making music and writing his own songs. He jumped from band to band looking for a chance, and dreamt that – one day – all the lonely kids on Planet Earth would sing his songs out loud. Changing his name to David Bowie, he decided to go solo. His first hit song, about a lonely astronaut, was played over television footage of the first man walking on the moon. And David’s career took off! David began performing with a red quiff, face paint and wild outfits. David became a true superstar – never boring, and always reinventing himself. He inspired generations of fans to find their own voice and dare to be different. David continued to make music for the rest of his life. By never being afraid to be himself, little David became the most unique star ever. He left the world as one of the most iconic performers of his generation.
