YOSSI GHINSBERG

The adventurer who went over a waterfall (Bolivia, 1981)

Covering more than two million square miles, the Amazon rainforest is an easy place to get lost in. Over the centuries it has claimed the lives of thousands of people who have ventured into its dark and dangerous depths in search of adventure, mysterious tribes and treasure. At the age of just twenty-two, fresh out of the Israeli navy, Yossi Ghinsberg was desperately keen to explore the area. He joked about discovering a lost tribe, marrying the chieftain’s daughter, and finding a fortune in gold and diamonds. Above all, he wanted to experience the romance and adventure he’d read about in books about great explorers. And so, in 1981, he set off into the jungle with three other travellers. The three were Karl Rurechter, an Austrian geologist, Marcus Stamm from Switzerland and an American photographer called Kevin Gale. They were not close friends and had met only a short time before beginning their adventure. Very quickly they began experiencing real difficulties, thanks to the exceptionally tough jungle environment and the absence of a professional local guide.

Without proper planning before the expedition set out, the men frequently went hungry too. Fighting their way through thick jungle also sapped their energy even more than they’d expected. The effort soon left all four of them exhausted and fed up. The wild, overgrown terrain also meant they were making such slow progress that they decided it might make more sense to travel by water. To do this they made a fairly basic raft by lashing together eight massive logs. However, after a series of clashes and disagreements, Rurechter and Stamm decided not to travel on the raft. They quit the expedition there and then and disappeared back into the jungle. Neither was ever seen again. Though inexperienced, Ghinsberg decided to stick with the raft idea, and together he and Gale began to make their way down the Tuichi River. Everything seemed to be all right to begin with, but then the nature of their journey changed dramatically. The two men found themselves being pitched around violently as the increasingly turbulent waters narrowed to enter the San Pedro Canyon. The ravine was strewn with rocks and debris, and their raft quickly became dangerously unstable in the churning white water. The primitive craft briefly wedged itself beneath the edge of a big boulder and, seizing his opportunity to escape, Gale leaped to safety. Unfortunately, as he jumped the raft dislodged, and to Ghinsberg’s horror it started off downstream towards a deep waterfall. Moments later it went over the edge and he found himself plunged into the depths. Rolled over and over by the force of the falling water, he was literally swallowed by the current.
