Full Professors (CU)
They represent the highest level of academic staff. They have full teaching and research responsibilities and work on a full-time basis. They hold a doctoral degree, have obtained accreditation as University Professors from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), and have successfully passed a competitive public examination among accredited candidates for a University Professor position.
Selection and recruitment procedures
The Governing Council, upon the Rector’s proposal, approves the requirements that candidates must meet to participate in the selection process.
The committees responsible for evaluating these selection processes are composed of:
- The chairmanship will be held by an active Full Professor (Catedrático de Universidad) from the relevant field or related areas important for the position.
- The secretary will be an active Full Professor.
- Three members of the committee will be professors from other universities and researchers of equal or higher rank than the position being filled, who are currently active and belong to the relevant field or related areas
These members will be selected through a public draw from a qualified list of professors, which will have a balanced composition of men and women and will include at least sixteen members. Each member should preferably have completed a minimum of two six-year research evaluation periods for Associate Professors (TU) and three for Full Professors (CU).
Recruitment Process
Predoctoral Researchers, R1
Predoctoral contracts: Doctoral students who have obtained a competitive predoctoral contract through calls funded by the Ministry responsible for Research, the Ministry responsible for Universities, the Community of Madrid, or other competitive calls, including UAM’s Internal Research Program.
Latest call
The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid creates a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 32 predoctoral positions each year within the framework of the Spanish Law (14/2011) on Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Procedure for the creation, call, and allocation of positions:
- Establishment of the number of positions and requirements: The Research Committee, upon proposal from the Vice-Rector for Research.
- Formation of Selection Committees: There are 8 different Selection Committees, one for each of the 8 Research Centers, which will evaluate the applications corresponding to their Center. In all cases, the Committee is composed of a group of (permanent) faculty members and chaired by the Vice-Dean for Research.
- Evaluation of candidates: The evaluation will consider the criteria specified in the call for each of the 8 different Research Centers.
Postdoctoral R2 Staff
- Assistant Professors on Tenure Track: Teaching and research staff with a six-year contract, full-time dedication, and full teaching and research responsibilities. Eligibility requirements are established according to the host department.
Regulations on selection, recruitment, and renewal
- Other professors included in the category of non-permanent postdoctoral staff. The selection, recruitment, and renewal of this non-permanent contracted faculty must comply with internal regulations.
Associate Professors (TU)
They are tenured members of the university teaching staff, with full teaching and research responsibilities and a full-time appointment. They hold a doctoral degree, have obtained accreditation as Associate Professors from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), and have successfully passed a competitive public examination among accredited candidates for an Associate Professor position.
Selection and recruitment procedures
The Governing Council, upon the Rector’s proposal, approves the requirements that candidates must meet to participate in the selection process.

Full-time permanent staff with a doctoral degree who have obtained accreditation as Contracted Doctor Professors (Profesores Contratados Doctores) from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), and have successfully passed a competitive selection process among accredited candidates for the position of Contracted Doctor Professor (PPL).
Selection and recruitment procedures
The Evaluation Committees will be appointed by the Governing Council and will have the following composition:
- Chair: The Rector or a professor with either a labor contract or tenured civil servant status, of equal or higher rank than the position being filled.
- Secretary: A professor with either a labor contract or tenured civil servant status, holding a doctoral degree and of equal or higher rank than the position being filled, appointed by the Department Council.
- Union Representation: A professor with either a labor contract or tenured civil servant status, holding a doctoral degree and of equal or higher rank than the position being filled, appointed by the Governing Council upon the proposal of the unions represented in the university’s staff representative bodies for teaching and research personnel (PDI).
- Four Professors: Professors with either a labor contract or tenured civil servant status from other universities and/or researchers holding a doctoral degree, of equal or higher rank than the position being filled, who belong to the relevant field or related areas.
Postdoctoral R3 Access Staff
Full-time university staff who have joined the university’s workforce through specific and highly competitive talent attraction programs managed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Spanish Government (Ramón y Cajal calls and contracts) or by the Government of the Community of Madrid (César Nombela calls and contracts).
