Message from the Headmaster

I had the pleasure of attending Year 9 Assembly today to wish the pupils all the best before their end of year examinations. My message was a simple one; that with good preparation and attentiveness to the advice of their teachers they will do well. Of course, a positive approach to revision will help too. It was also lovely to hand out certificates to lots of the year group for their prize research projects. The way that the group celebrated their peers was a delight to see. Year 7 and Year 8 pupils will be pleased to be finishing their examinations; I know they have been challenged to finish the year well and I wish them luck in their results. We had our new starters day on Monday where it was great to see our future students settling in so well and beginning the start of their time with us with excitement. It is poignant that this event takes place just as many students are finishing their time in the valley after their A Levels and BTECs. We wish all of those leaving the very best for their futures and we hope to see them at many Old Amplefordian events in the future. This week we also said farewell to Edward Sparrow, our outgoing Chair of Governors. I am so very grateful for Edward’s service and am delighted that we have Edmund Craston, an OA and, until recently a current parent, as our new Chair. Best wishes, Jon

New Starters Induction Day

It was wonderful to welcome our new starters for September to their Induction day on Monday. The students enjoyed an exciting day of lessons and activities, a taster of their upcoming time at Ampleforth College. Parents heard from the Senior leadership Team here at Ampleforth about how to support their child with the transition to Ampleforth as well as a fantastic opportunity to meet each other.

Silver Duke of Edinburgh

27 adventurous students headed to the Yorkshire Dales for their Silver Duke of Edinburgh assessment expedition last week. Beyond the awesome landscapes, these expeditions are all about planning, teamwork and resilience. Three days and two nights of exploration, challenge, and camaraderie, an experience the students will carry forever.

Ceramics Workshop with Emily Stubbs

On Tuesday, our Year 12 Artists and our Art Scholars were given the opportunity to meet York based Aritst, Emily Stubbs who shared the techniques that she uses as well as talking to the students about her inspiration and journey to becoming an Artist. Students put into practice their newly learnt skills, getting hands-on with clay to mark make and using new screen printing techniques.

Message from Mrs Dent

As we head into the last two weeks of term, the fullness of Ampleforth life continues for those year groups remaining. At the same time we say our final goodbyes to Year 13 and wave off Year 11s for the summer. This week, Gold Duke of Edinburgh teams have been on their final practice expedition in the Lake District, returning on Sunday. Cecilie, Gabrielle and Sophie performed in the Senior Music Recital and Rebecca joined Yr10 CAFOD Young Leaders on their trip to Southwark Cathedral. A huge thank you to parents of our Year 13 leavers for their gift to the house of a set of amazing yellow and white striped directors chairs - the perfect addition to our garden, they'll provide memories of the class of '25 for years to come. Ceri Dent, Housemistress St Aidan's House

Final Mass for our 'Holy Shaccie' Isla

It would be hard to overstate the level of service Isla has given over the past year as 'Holy Shaccie', the affectionate name give to the lead Chaplaincy Monitor. This role has seen Isla take on the considerable responsiblity for the smooth running of School Mass each week and on special occasions. She has added an element of sartorial flair this year with her customised chaplaincy tie, worn with great pride at each service in the Abbey.

From our new Head of House......

I'm Clover, next Year's Head of House. I am very excited to be taking on this house role. I look forward to working with the house team to make continued postive changes in the house, making it as homely, comforting and fun as possible for everyone, especially new students joining us in September. This is an important role for communication between the house team and students. My priorities are making sure all the new starters have a smooth start to the year, feel welcome and involved, as well as supporting the good atmosphere in the house , including participation in house events. Working with deputies Gabrielle and Katie, it is important to me that everyone in the house has many approachable, friendly faces in the upper years that they can turn to for guidance and support.

Saying Goodbye

We held a special supper in house last Friday for our Year 13 leavers before they started to trickle away the next day. There remain a core of 7 who will be with us until their final exam next Friday

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.

That Time of Year...

The sun is shining in the valley and the recent announcement of adopting summer dress was greeted with wholesale happiness. This is a term, as it works towards the summer, where we enjoy making the most of all that the valley has to offer. And as we enjoy cricket, walks, running, playing games with friends on the astro, some of our house family are waving goodbye to the same valley but hopefully not for the final time! We have nurtured and supported our Year Thirteen and Eleven boys through the exam season and now we are wishing them well as they go off for the summer or, in the case of Year Thirteen, to the next steps of their academic journeys. A busy week of socials and end of year assessments has kept the boys on their toes. With some lovely events planned coming towards the end of term, it promises to be a wonderful end to the year for us all. I hope to see many of you in the valley in the coming weeks and at the end of term.

Happy Birthday Diego!

Saying Goodbye...

Our Year 13's will leave this month- stay connected for updates on them. In the meantime we would like to say thank you to all of them for being such spectacular role models in the school and leading our house this year.

The Bede's Effect

The Bede's Effect

The Bede's Effect

Saying Goodbye...

Martha and Evie left Bede's on Monday night after finishing their 3rd Business exam. They joined St Bede's in year 12 and have been such a delight to have in the House and we couldn't be prouder of them and what they have accomplished. Evie was our Deputy Head of House and she plans to study Finance and Economics at Newcastle in September. Martha is taking a gap year to then join Evie next year at Newcastle studying business. We wish them both the best and pray that on results day their labours have proved to be successful.

Saying Goodbye...

Miriam has brought joy and friendship to the House Margaret is a true all rounder and has shown her ability to sing, act, write and much more during her time in ST Bede's House. She has really brought all her gifts together in the Sixth Form and will no doubt show her true potential in the summer exams.

Saying Goodbye... Anastasia has excelled in everything she has done! Mariia has brought balance and community spirit to the Sixth Form.

Saying Goodbye... Clara said, "Since childhood I watched so many TV shows theyinspired me to be a filmmaker. Coming to St Bede's has certainly felt like being in a film ! I have gained lots of inspiration for my future career here!"

Ophelia has enjoyed shooting and riding as well as skiing over the sixth form years. She has been an active member of the House andwill be missed

Saying Goodbye... Katie has been an angel in House.. and a secret weapon in Cricket, Basketball and Badmington. We hope she visits often because we will miss her! Anamika has been the incredibly kind advocate for others in House. The still small voice of calm and reason at all times who likes Physics and the electric guitar.

Saying Goodbye.. Anastasia has been an amazing Deputy Head of School she has shown courage and determination in all that she does and always has a smile on her face however difficult the challenges are that face her. We have had an incredible role model.

Hannah joined Bede's in year 13 and truly found a home in this House. Her wit and houmour will be missed, as well as her geniune kindness and love for her friends. Wishing you all the best for the future Hannah and we are excited to see what's to come!

Message from the Housemaster

On this day, 2 years ago, we took a farewell photo with Fr Henry. A quiet week of more year 11 and year 13 public exams. Next week, the year 9s will sit their internal end of year examinations. Good luck to all of them.

Student Leadership

Benny, our Head of House and Head Monitor for Sports, on his first Sunday duty as Holy Shaccie. Not only did he look the part, he also did a stellar job and Mass ran smoothly. What a guy!

Sunday Mass

Ben's last active participation during Sunday Mass as Thurifer. His contributions to our religious life have been outstanding!

Sunday Mass

Jonty's first day of action as usher.

Sunday Night is Deli Night

As every Sunday, the boys (and Fr Henry) enjoyed the delights of deli night.

Sunday Night is Deli Night

And just look at that view through the windows. I don't think we will ever take the beauty of the valley for granted.

Valete! New Starters' Day

On Monday, we welcomed four of our new year 9s (from September) into our fold: Freddie from Aysgarth, Freddie from Prior Park (Gibraltar), Oliver and Batholomew from Junior House.

Farewell to Rafe

On Tuesday, Rafe was the first of our Upper Sixth to leave after his final exams. He made sure to say good-bye to all (here with Dom and Javier).

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Last week from Wednesday to Friday, Ollie, Javier, Ollie, Paddy and Luke were part of the DoE expedition. They returned in good spirits but very tired.

House Life

Sometimes it is better not to ask too many questions...

House Life

Year 10s working (relatively) hard at prep time.

Last social gathering

During our last get-together, I asked the leavers what they got away with during their time at Ampleforth. I am happy to report that no new grey hair has appeared on my head as a result.

Friday morning prayers

This morning, our year 12s took over running morning prayers from our Upper Sixth. I am looking forward to their leadership and guidance in the coming year.

Last but not least

Orlando clearly being "King of the Castel" in our house garden.

Message from Ms Paterson

Dear Parents As the summer term moves steadily forward, this week has brought with it a calm and contemplative spirit within the house. While there have been no sporting victories to report this time, the energy has been no less positive – simply redirected toward revision, reflection, and a few emotional farewells. Our ever-reliable and utterly marvellous Moragh has maintained her impeccable standards, treating us all to her usual quota of lovingly baked cakes. The comforting smell of sponge and cinnamon has offered both solace and celebration for those in need of a sweet break from studies. A heartfelt goodbye goes to some of our Year 11 and Year 13 students who have now completed their exams. The house has felt a little lighter – and a little quieter – as they’ve headed off for well-earned rest, adventure, and next chapters. We wish them every success and look forward to hearing of the bright futures ahead of them. Those that remain continue to work hard until the very last exam. Meanwhile, students in Years 9 and other lower years in the college are continuing their revision with admirable dedication. The atmosphere has been one of quiet determination, supported by one another’s encouragement and the unwavering guidance of staff. It’s a joy to witness such maturity and mutual respect. As we round out another week at St Margaret’s, we are reminded of what makes this place special: the rhythms of tradition, the kindness of community, and the unwavering support of every individual in the house. Best wishes Rebecca
