Levels of formality

There are three factors that we need to keep in mind when deciding the level of formality between people. When more factors are in place, follow the steps: if step 3 says "formal', addess the other person formally. When in doubt, it's always best to choose formality and then switch to or agree on a less formal tone.

If someone is 'more important' [such as a doctor, a professor, a lawyer, or anyone who seems to require a more respectful appreoach] you should address them formally

LEVELS OF FORMALITY

Dr Brown addresses Hannah with 'Ciao' instead of 'Buongiorno'. This is because the person with the higher level of formality can choose to address the other formally or informally. Hannah is younger than Dr Brown and she's a patient, so the doctor can decide what level of formality he prefers to use

Familiarity

Although Mike and Sabrina are the same age, they don't know each other so they should address each other formally. If they knew each other, they could address each other informally.

Age

Martina meets Angela. Martina is 25 and Angela is an older lady. Without any other information available, we know Martina shoudl address Angela formally. Angela, however, can address Martina informally or formally. Without any other information,

Hierarchy

It doesn't matter if Sarah knows Professor Smith, or if they are the same age. Sarah should still address Professor Smith formally.

Who decides?

The person in the more formal position is usually the one to decide what tone to use. They can be formal or informal and they normally are the ones to suggest to switch to informal!
