Hiking along the Potomac River

Did you know that... The Potomac River is a popular spot for kayaking. Many bring their own kayaks and both the Virginia and Maryland sides provide easy access to the river. Additionally, there are numerous places to rock climb, and one has the opportunity to experience climbing directly above water.

C&O Canal Park

The Billy Goat Trails

Billy Goat Trail A floods easily and includes a rocky terrain that creates a more difficult hike. Furthermore, there are various aspects of the trail that are quite steep, and we would not reccomend it for young children. However, Billy Goat Trail C is extremely family-friendly. Trail C has a much smoother path in comparison to Trail A, featuring a small waterfall as well as minimal rock outcroppings. Trail B is currently closed for erosion and trail damage.

The Maryland side of the falls include:

  • Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park
  • The Billy Goat Trail
    • Split into three different sections: A, B, C

Great Falls Park

This side of the park provides access to three different overlooks of the falls, as well as a space for picnics near the Visitor Center. The park was established as a part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in 1966, but Indigenous people have inhabited the area since 10,500 BC (National Park Service).
