How to make

a motorized toy car

Let's get started

Materials You'll Need

  • 2 empty plastic water/soda bottles (500ml works best)
  • 4 plastic bottle caps (same size) 2 BBQ sticks or skewers (for axles)
  • 2 straws (for axle holders)
  • 1 small DC motor (from an old toy or bought cheaply)
  • 1 AA battery + battery holder 1 small switch (optional)
  • 1 rubber band or pulley belt (can cut from a balloon or glove)
  • Hot glue gun or strong glue
  • Tape Scissors or craft knife Marker pen
  • Decorative materials (stickers, paint, markers)
NEXT

Step 1: Make the Car Body

  • Take one plastic bottle and remove any labels.
  • Cut out a rectangular window
This will be your car chassis.
NEXT

Step 2: Prepare the Axles

  • Cut two equal pieces of straw (about 5cm each) and glue/tape them horizontally under the bottle, one near the front, one near the back.
  • Slide BBQ sticks through the straws, these will be your axles.
NEXT

Step 3: Make the Wheels

  • Poke a hole through the center of each bottle cap using a nail or heated metal skewer.
  • Insert a cap onto each end of the BBQ stick and secure with glue or tape.
  • Test roll your car, it should move freely!
NEXT

Step 4: Add the Motor

  • Attach the DC motor to the side or top of the bottle using glue.
  • Attach a small wheel or pulley to the motor shaft (or use a piece of pen cap or bottle cap).
  • Loop the rubber band around the motor pulley and the rear axle (wrap it tight so it grips!).
NEXT

Step 5: Power It Up

  • Connect the battery holder to the motor using wires.
  • Secure the battery holder on top or inside the bottle.
  • Insert the AA battery.
NEXT

Step 6: Test Drive

  • Turn on the switch or connect the wires.
  • The motor should spin, turning the axle and making your car move forward!
