Dates of creation : 1915 : Historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History 1926 : The second week of February was declared as "Negro History Week". 1976 : The month of February became Black History Month. Why ? : "to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

2. Birth of the USA & slavery : George washington

Date & place of birth : February 22, 1732, Virginia Date & place of death : December 14, 1799, Virginia Early life : His father died (11). Raised by his older brother. Career : - Commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War - One of the Founding Fathers of the USA - 1st president of the U.S.A (1789 -1797) Achievements : National hero. Set his slaves free after his death. Legacy : The name of the Capital City, the Washington Monument, Inclusion on Mount Rushmore.

Date & place of birth : In 1745, in the village of Essaka in Igboland, Nigeria. Date & place of death : 31st March 1797 (Aged 52) in London, in the United Kingdom. Early life : ensalved as a child and shipped to the Caribbean Career : Former slave + writer and abolitionist Achievements : - became a free slave in 1766. - one of the leading figures of the British abolitionist movement. - wrote his memoirs. - His memoirs helped secure passage of the British Slave Trade Act 1807, which abolished the slave trade.

Date & place of birth : 10th July 1807 or 1808, Rhode Island, USA Date & place of death : 1857 Early life : Mother : a free woman of color / father : freedman Career : musician / Abolitionist Primary author of the memoir "twlve years a slave" Challenges and struggles : - Kidnapped while playing in Washington DC. Achievements : - Escaped the plantation and fled to New York. - Regained his freedom on January, 3rd 1853. - Thanks to his testimony, he managed to put his kidnappers prison. Legacy : Testimony about the brutality of slavery.

Date & place of birth : March 1822 in Maryland, USA Birthname : Araminta Harriet Greene Date & place of death : 10th March 1913 in New York, USA Early life : - Born a slave - lived with Araminta (mother), Ben and Harry (brothers) Career : - Slave / Undeground Railroad conductor - American abolitionist and social activist Achievements : - Escaped as a slave. - made some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people, using the Underground Railroad. - Activist for women's suffrage.

Date & place of birth : 12th February 1809, in Kentucky, USA Date & place of death : Assassinated on 15th April 1865 in Washington, USA Early life : - His family was very poor. - He only went to school for 1 year Career : the 16th president of the USA (1861 - 1865) Political party : Republican party Challenges and struggles : - He led the US throughout the American Civil War. - He defeated the Confederate States of America. Legacy : - He is known as "The Great Emancipator" because he ended slavery. - One-cent coins, Five-dollar bills, face on Mount Rushmore, Memorial.

7. Boycott & civil disobedience : Rosa Parks

Date & place of birth : February 3, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama Date & place of death : October 24, 2005 in Detroit, Michigan Early life : She went to a black-only school when she was 6. Career : Civil-right activist Challenges and struggles : - She refused to give up her seat on a bus for a white man. - She was arrested for breaking segregation laws. - Parks' arrest led to the influential Montgomery bus boycott, which lasted 381 days. Achievements : The boycott was successful : the law changed ! Legacy : She is known as "the mother of the Modern-Day American civil rights movement" and "the mother of the freedom movement"

8. Civil Rights Movement : Martin Luther King

He skipped two grades ! Career : American pastor, activist, humanitarian. Achievements : - He was one of the leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. - He delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech during the 1963 March on Washington. - He improved civil rights by using nonviolent civil disobedience.
