Induction and Mentoring
Overview of the Programme Elements
Ako Panuku has developed an Induction and Mentoring resource that outlines some fundamental elements needed for a quality support programme. It is intended to be used by mentors and beginning teachers to:
- discuss what is found in a professional portfolio
- showcase evidence and feedback from observations
- store links to online documents, websites, or networks as external resources
- write notes from staff, mentoring, or cluster meetings.

TE PAE TAWHITI | VISION
Your vision highlights your beliefs and values. It is a map showing how you will get to your desired destination. It should inspire and energise you in getting there. Write your vision by asking yourself:
- Why did I choose teaching as my career?
- What do I want to achieve as a teacher?
- What hopes and aspirations do I have for myself and my students?
- What do I value as a teacher?
- How do these values show up in my practice?
- How do I demonstrate my vision in daily interactions with students?
TE PAE TATA | GOAL SETTING
It’s not enough to just have a vision. To make it a reality, break it down into achievable goals. When thinking about goals, think about them in the long-term and short-term. Consider career, professional, and personal goals. Use the following to develop goals that show your priorities, and what can be left to work on later. Make your goals SMART!
If goals are too broad, it will be difficult to achieve them. Keep them succinct.
SPECIFIC
Ensure goals are easily measured so you know when they have been achieved
MEASUREABLE
ACHIEVABLE
Set goals that are challenging but achievable.
RELEVANT
Set a timeframe and stick to it!
TIME-BOUND
Ensure goals are relevant and are realistic.
Smarter Goal Setting
Unpack the SMART goal framework with Creative Huddle.

TE AKO NGAIOTANGA | PLD
Professional Learning is one of the Standards for the Teaching Profession. It is important to continue learning in order to design, and sustain, an energetic and inspiring learning culture.
NGĀ KITENGA | OBSERVATIONS
Observations should be planned, so there are no surprises! They shouldn’t be feared, but rather accepted as a natural part of the teacher journey. Agree on what will be observed, for how long, and the time. Observations could include:
- moving ākonga into groups
- amount of teacher talk
- clarity of instructions
- relevance of resources
- planning and assessment
- classroom culture and management.
TE WHAKATAUNGA | SUMMARY REPORT
- Feedback, summary of practice - signed and dated by mentor and PCT.
- ‘Other’ mentor feedback and progress reports.
- Professional Growth Cycle – documentation and evidence.
