There is no such thing as silence: we are constantly surrounded by sound* (even in a silent place). The Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer talks about ‘soundscapes’ that can be listened to as music.

Soundscapes

Listening is subjective: two people in the same place will not necessarily hear the same thing. The soundscape is an invitation to listen for pleasure, to travel through sounds and voices.

Soundscapes

Écouter le monde (Listening to the world) Weekly on RFI and available online at RFI.fr. Monica Fantini collects soundscapes and testimonies from all over the world. She chooses, cuts and assembles the different elements to create her 2.5-minute soundscape. The editing can be simple - a collage of soundscapes - or complex - different voices, soundscapes, music. In all cases, there is a story: we say that editing is radio writing.
