- Research states that, by 2050, plastic will likely outweigh all fish in the sea.
- Plastic generally takes between 500-1000 years to degrade.
Impacts:
- Plastic pollution in the ocean has a devastating impact on marine life and ecosystems. Animals may ingest plastic, become tangeled in them, cut by they, or even strangled by them.
- Once plastic enters the marine food web, there is a possibility that it will contaminate the human food chain as well
- According to research, the yearly economic costs of plastic in the ocean are estimated to be between 6-19 billion dollars.
