A special week in the valley started with a beautiful and packed Confirmation service on Sunday.
Our 1st XI boys Cricket team won a thrilling victory against the MCC last Saturday - quite a feat - while our girls tennis teams also had great set of fixtures against Dame Allan's. Sport was on the agenda for the whole senior school in the inter-house athletics competition on Monday with 2 school records in Boys Discus and Girls Long Jump. The grand finale was the usual 32 by 200m relays - always tremendous to watch.
Y11 have had their first core GCSE exam this week which helped gear them up for next week which is a busy one exam wise. Meanwhile Harriet and I have been busy recruiting new families with a wonderful reception very kindly hosted by Gina and Richard Hill in Gibraltar and another great evening in Madrid where Yasmin and Ben Crosse arranged a fantastic venue. We were joined in Madrid by Fr Cedd and Emma and, at both events, it was the power of advocacy from our alumni who came to support us which won everyone over.
It was rather moving to hear the church bells ringing in Madrid celebrating the news of our new Pope, Leo XIV. I was sorry not to be at school for our special service marking this special moment. We all pray for the success of his papacy.
VE Day
To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, Ampleforth College's Combined Cadet Force conducted a flag-raising ceremony, in common with similar events taking place across the country. The flag-raising ceremony was the first in a series of events throughout the day. Including a charity bake sale supporting the Royal British Legion and our CCF supporting a local community service. The day then culminated in a beacon lighting ceremony at Danby Beacon, a simultaneous event that took place at locations across the country. VE Day is not only an opportunity for remembrance but also an occasion for rightful celebration that the sacrifice made by service personnel and civilians alike to achieve victory was worthwhile and provided the basis for the lives we are fortunate enough to enjoy today. May we hope as a community never to see such a terrible conflict take place again.
House Athletics
It was a day of spirited competition at the Inter-House Athletics Competition on Monday. Fantastic to see everyone in their House colours cheering on their housemates in a variety of different track and field events throughout the afternoon. Congratulations to our fantastic athletes who gave it their all, and a special congratulations to Harry (Year 10, Hugh's) for breaking the school Discus record with an amazing throw of 33.8 metres! The winning houses are:
Inter Girls: Joint Champions - Aidan's and Margaret's
Inter Boys: Dunstan's & Oswald's
Senior Girls: Margaret's
Senior Boys: Cuthbert's & Thomas'
We celebrate the election of the new Pope, Leo XIV, and the whole school gathered together today in the Abbey Church to sing the ancient and formal celebration hymn Te Deum Laudamus. May the Lord guide Pope Leo XIV as the shepherd of his flock, the Church.

Message from Mrs Dent
Another week has flown by and an eventful one at that. Confirmation weekend was a joy and a wonderful way to start the Summer Term. Last Sunday saw our first Sunday BBQ of the season, with hopefully many more sunny weekends to come. On Bank Holiday Mondaym we came together as a school for Inter-House Athletics, another great whole school occasion. It's always such an inspiration to see the girls step forward to compete and have fun. The collective house spirit saw some individual event wins and joint first place overall for the intermediate Years 9 and 10. A little chilly, but the ice-cream van was greatly appreciated none the less. Year 11's had their first written GCSE exam of the season on Thursday, so are now well and truly off the stating blocks, with A levels starting proper on Monday. Of course, this week has seen the added excitement of the conclave and election of Pope Leo XIV. Our house deanery session on Thursday reflected on Pope Francis' final Easter message to the world and at House Mass in the evening we wre able to pray for the new Pope. Ceri Dent, Housemistress St Aidan's House
Confirmation
Confirmation weekend, as always, was a wonderful occasion, especially for those being confirmed and their family and friends. Such an occasion involves a huge amount of preparaion and a supporting cast of many. St Aidan's members played a signifiant part, with many singing in the Schola, Lily as a phenomenal cantor and Agnes reading. Special thanks too goes to Lottie, our House Catechist, for her commitment in supporting Fr Philip in preparing our confirmandi over recent months.

What an eventful week to reflect back upon!
Last weekend was an exciting mix of socials, confirmation, activities and settling into the weeked routine at school. As a house we are proud of all of the boys who were confirmed and all those who acted as sponsors - it is lovely to see boys take on such an important responsibility so willingly. To have many of the boys also helping deliver the Mass is always a proud moment too.
House Athletics on Monday was a roaring success! Senior and Overall winners! Every boy who participated made a contribution to the points and the success of the whole house. The House spirit on show was clear and the boys gave each other huge support and praise. Watching the boys jumping with joy at the end with students from all year groups will remain a highlight for me.
Y12 trials assessments gave way to Y10 ones this week and a moment of realisation as the first of the GCSE examinations proper with English on Thursday. Academics will remain a big focus, as you would expect, this term whilst the house remains a haven for the boys. A place where they can recharge and destress before taking on the next challenge.
Thursday also saw the election of Pope Leo XIV, a monumental moment for the Catholic Church and for the college. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate this in House Mass on Thursday.
With half term a mere two weeks away, I look forward to seeing you all at Exhibition.

Dear Parents Well, if this past week had a soundtrack, it would be a glorious mix of choir hymns, triumphant victory tunes, and maybe a little Gregorian chant with a drumline. What a rollercoaster of celebration, spirit, and possibly one or two lost voices (mine included)! On Sunday we were honoured to witness a truly beautiful and moving Confirmation ceremony in the Abbey, where five of our girls were confirmed in a service full of meaning and grace. It was a very special occasion, marking a profound step in their spiritual journey, and we are incredibly proud of each of them. This week, two more girls will be confirmed in the Anglican Church, and we will be keeping them in our prayers as they take this important step in faith. St Margaret’s House absolutely sprinted into victory in the Inters and Seniors House Athletics competitions. The house spirit was so loud, I’m surprised we didn’t set off nearby car alarms. A huge shout-out to Ms Buckley and Moragh—our resident coach/cheerleader/fuel-injector—for rallying the troops. I myself yelled so passionately that my vocal cords staged a walkout the next morning. Worth it. Meanwhile, our heroic Year 11s took their first full GCSE exam. To prepare them for battle, Moragh (thank heavens she's back—no offense to my "heat and hope" ready meals) whipped up a lunch so nutritious and comforting it could’ve been prescribed. The girls marched into the exam hall full of calm, knowledge, and carbohydrates. Then came the papal election. After House Mass, the study turned into Vatican Live HQ. We hovered around the screen, hanging on every puff of smoke until—bam—white smoke and a new Pope! Pope Leo XIV has our prayers, our applause, and probably our collective screen time stats for the week. A truly historic moment, complete with gasps, cheers, and one rogue celebratory biscuit. So here’s to St Margaret’s House—where the faith is strong, the feet are fast, and the community spirit is practically Olympic. May the week ahead bring even more joy, togetherness, and perhaps a little less yelling from me. Best wishes Rebecca

Chaplaincy
On Wednesday, Junior House Chaplaincy nurtured our young spirits through belonging, kindness, and faith exploration.
The children learned about the unique process of electing a new Pope. Cardinals gather in a secret Conclave in the Sistine Chapel, voting by secret ballot and needing a two-thirds majority. The exciting signal of white smoke from the chimney indicates a successful election.
They also experienced praying the Rosary, reflecting on the mysteries of Jesus and Mary's lives using rosary beads and a sequence of prayers. A highlight was praying the Rosary together as a Junior House community in the Marian Prayer Garden, strengthening their faith and sense of unity.
