We kick into SATs overdrive
Past papers comin out our ears
readin between the lines
stupid reasonin questions I’ll never need
infinitives and rubbish like that.
Even the readin papers are stupid
I mean
some muppet claimin to know
what a poem’s about,
givin it a right and wrong answer,
man, some people are stupid.
Mr Joshua’s good at keepin the chill on things,
Just hoops to jump through, guys,
that’s all they are
try your best
you know what I think of you all.
Soon it’ll all be over
and it’s freewheeling all the way to high school,
transition days
new uniforms
stepping stones to a new life.

And what do I always say guys…
and then the song’s on again.
Every little thing…
The lake is so beautiful
Even when paddlin across it on a rickety raft
built of oil drums, planks of wood, rope
and a whole loada hope
that feels like it might fall apart any minute.
The sounds of paddles and shouts,
as we race another raft
towards the little boat in the middle
that John and Mr Joshua and Griffinroar
are wavin at us from,
disappear from my mind so quickly
that it’s almost like I’m there alone.
From: The Final Year by Matt Goodfellow © 2023. Licensed under CLA. Do not copy or share.
And all around me reflects the sky
and the snow lays heavy
on the shoreline and mountains.
And, man,
I’m thinking what David Almond
would write about this place
what flow he’d create and then
there’s a sudden rumble in the distance
and flashin low over the top of a mountain
is a jet plane, man
like a proper fighter jet
blastin round the sky
like it’s havin fun or summat
and Caleb touches my arm cos he’s with me too
and I’m frozen in the moment
we’re frozen in the moment.
The world stops
And it’s gone.

SATs overdrive means the class is working hard and urgently to prepare. The poet uses exaggeration when he says the practice papers are ‘comin out our ears’ which means they are doing an excessive amount of them. Nate seems overwhelmed by the effort required.
