Not everyone dreams of sitting behind a desk. Some people prefer working with their hands, others like helping people face to face. Jobs are as different as the people who do them. Take Adam, for example. He’s a (1) _________ who works long hours at the city hospital, but he says helping patients recover makes it all worth it. Just down the road, a team of (2) ___________ workers are busy building new apartments. It’s tiring work, and one of them told us that some new hires quickly (3) __________ when they realise how tough it is. Meanwhile, Sophie, a journalism student, was recently hired to (4) __________ on local news for the town website. She’s always looking for interesting stories. A new business park is also opening nearby and is ready to (5) __________ a job to dozens of people—from experienced managers to the local (6) __________ looking for new challenges. There’s also work behind the scenes. James, for example, has done all kinds of (7) __________, from fixing windows to painting walls. After returning home from the army, his brother, a former (8) __________, struggled to find something he liked. He ended up working with Carl, an (9) __________ worker who had never trained for any specific career. On the other hand, some young people are just starting out. Emma, for instance, works as a (10) ___________ in the afternoons and recently completed (11) __________ to become a (12) ___________ worker. Now, she visits elderly people and helps them with their daily tasks. There are more ambitious plans, too. Alex, a university student, dreams of becoming an architect and can’t wait to (13) ___________. “It’s hard work but very (14) ___________ in a good way,” he says. His best friend, Zoe, is a (15) __________. She trains every week and is always ready for emergencies. Their neighbour, Mia, is a talented (16) ___________ who earns money by performing at weddings and local events. Everyday jobs matter just as much. A friendly (17) ___________ helps out at the school once a week. The postman still comes every morning to (18) __________ and parcels, rain or shine. And when there was a leak last month, the (19) __________ showed up within an hour—with a smile and a (20) ___________ solution.

How to use

The aim of these activities is to review vocabulary sets at the level of B1/B1+ especially with students preparing for the 8th grader's exam. The set contains 2 topics based on Repetytorium ósmoklasisty, Nowa Era, Work and People. The teacher gets two types of cloze texts that can be used as a revision during the lesson but also as the extra homework practice to reinforce students' knowledge. Each exercise can be checked by the student independently so the students can also check themselves. Teacher's notes contain all the included texts with the correct answers.
CLASS ACTIVITY - show students the text and ask them to work it out themselves. Check the activity when everybody has finished. CLASS COMPETITION - divide students into groups/pairs and give them a limited amount of time. Ask ss to work out the answers together. Finally check the answers with the students aloud and assign points for each correct answer. SMALL GROUPS - divide students into small groups of 3/4 and ask them to sit together. Tell them to read sentence by sentence each and fill in the missing infortmation. Then check together on the board.
