Why the Bear has a Stumpy Tail
Stories from North America – Part Two
“The fish won’t be able to resist your fine, fat tail,” said Fox. “It may hurt a little when they bite, but be patient – the longer you can wait, the more tasty fish you’ll catch.”
“When you think you’ve got enough, just pull your tail out with a quick, strong tug,” continued Fox with a smile.
Bear thanked Fox warmly and hurried down to the lake, eager to catch himself a good dinner. He licked his lips hungrily at the thought of all the fish he would catch.

He cut a hole in the ice and sat with his tail dangling in the water. The cold soon made his tail hurt. “Aha!” he thought. “The fish are starting to bite!” All afternoon he sat, imagining the delicious fish he was catching. At last, he couldn’t wait any longer.
But when Bear tried to stand up he couldn’t move. “These fish are heavy,” he thought with a smile. Then he remembered that Fox told him to pull his tail out with a quick, strong tug.
Bear tugged hard and up he stood – but not one fish came out of the ice hole, and not much tail either, for it was stuck fast in the frozen lake!
Since that day, bears have always had stumpy tails and have never trusted a fox.
