Why the Bear has a Stumpy Tail
Stories from North America – Part One
One winter’s day, Bear met Fox, who was carrying a string of fish. Bear gazed at the fish with hungry eyes.
“That’s a good dinner you’ve got there,” he said. “How did you catch so many?”
“It’s easy if you know the secret,” said sly Fox. “Someone with a fine tail like you could catch himself plenty of fish.”
Bear licked his lips at the thought of it. “What’s the secret?” he asked.
Fox looked over his shoulder to check that no one else was listening, as if he was going to share a big secret.

Then he whispered to Bear, “Go out onto the frozen lake and cut a hole in the ice. Then stick your tail through the hole into the water and wait for the fish to bite.” Bear listened carefully. “The fish won’t be able to resist your fine, fat tail,” said Fox. “It may hurt a little when they bite, but be patient – the longer you can wait, the more tasty fish you’ll catch.”
“When you think you’ve got enough, just pull your tail out with a quick, strong tug,” continued Fox with a smile.
