Welcome Back!

Let's review some important information from Module 1
  • Foster Parents are required by Virginia State law to act within a child's best interest at all times.
  • Foster Parents can not make medical decisions for the youth or divert from a youth's service plan.
  • All medications and supplements - prescription or over the counter - must be locked away at all times. This includes medication for other family members and pets.
  • A first aid kit should be readily available, but not accessible to children.

What about over the counter medications?

Click on the icon and then return to the course after you have explored the resources.

Even though many medications are available wihout a prescription, you must have authorization from the child's care team to give a child ANY medication including over the counter drugs such as pain relievers, fever reducers, sleep aids, and antihistimines. Non-prescription medications taken should be documented the same as prescription medications. This excludes diaper rash ointment and sunscreen.

It is critical to stay on schedule when giving medications. Trying to stay within a one hour window of the appointed time is best. Many medications require a continually therapeutic level in the body to work effectively.

Check the route of administration. Some routes such as subcutaneous and intermuscular injections may require a level of practice before your administer to a child.

Check the dosage and be sure to use appropriate measuring tools for the type of medication. Liquids and injections in particular should be measured with extra care.

Three more rights to consider

Right Documentation

Right Response

Right Reason

All medication and medication errors must be documented. It is best to document directly after administration.

A parent of a foster child should understand what the medicine is for and follow all instructions of the child's service plan.

Know the expected outcome of taking the medication and be prepared to discuss medication response with the care team.

The last two rights to consider

The youth may resist medication for a variety of reasons. Medication refusal must be documented and discussed with the care team.

The youth has a right to an age appropriate understanding of the reason the medication was prescribed.
