AI guidelines
Why should I use AI?
- This new technology has clear benefits for language teachers and learners.
- It is changing the nature of instruction already.
- As a result, the ROLE of the TEACHER is changing too.
Language teaching is even more important because the communication with AI is through language. Communicating clearly and effectively is one of the most important skills people will need.
Jules White, Vanderbilt University
Personalising learning
Being able to personalise a trainee's learning is one of the clear use cases for generative AI in language teaching. How can you tailor you teaching to my trainee's needs? There are these (and more factors) at play:
- industry / sector the trainee works in
- company / department / team of the trainee
- job role / function of the trainee
- professional situations / scenarios / challenges they face
- specific vocabulary (functional language + terminology/jargon) the trainee needs
- personalised feedback you can provide for a trainee
- ...

Content creation
What do I need? My next project: I am giving a 3 hour workshop at a telecommunications company to a group of trainees at A2 level of English. My workshop needs to focus on:
- vocabulary they need for their work;
- language they need in daily interactions with customers & colleagues;
- how to build their confidence in (mostly) spoken communication.
Content types
What else can you ask for/generate?
- Technical vocabulary: specific words and phrases they need for their profession with examples for context
- Activities based on specific vocabulary, points of grammar, etc.
- Scenarios and role-plays for practising the language you've taught.
- In the format you like: text, table, etc.
Typical scenarios
What do I need? I need example scenarios to practise typical conversations, using specific vocabulary. I need model dialogues to show as examples. I need a list of key phrases from the dialogues. I need key vocabulary they need to practise.
GenAI as learning aid
It's a great tool for:
- feedback on writing: structure, register, etc
- correction of a piece of writing: grammar, vocabulary, spelling
- feedback on translation (e.g. DeepL + ChatGPT)
Tip: Ask the tool to specifically provide feedback on a piece of writing so the trainee learns something from the interaction and doesn't just get a simple correction.
And more ...
You can use it in other ways too, e.g.: 1: Your trainee's job For preparing your first lesson, find out what that specific job involves. Ask of a short summary to save yourself time. 2: Your trainee's industry For personalising your teaching, ask for a short explanation of the trainee's industry or sector. Great ways to prepare for your first class!
