The standard retirement age for everyone born in or after 1964 is 67. In 2025, people born between January 1 and March 31, 1959, will be able to retire at the regular age, as the standard retirement age has been raised to 66 years and 2 months.
To receive a retirement pension, you must have paid into the pension insurance for at least 5 years. EU citizens can also access this benefit. Have you paid less than 5 years in Germany? In that case, your contributions will be credited in your home country without any disadvantage for you.
Would you like to learn more about your pension entitlement? Request all the necessary documents online and receive them by post.
Your pension entitlement remains valid in other EU countries, as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Your employment periods from different countries will be added together, so you won't face any disadvantages. Submit your pension application in the country where you last worked or where you live.
What is the amount of your pension?Use the pension calculator of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (the German public pension fund) to determine your entitlements:
You can retire early if you meet certain conditions, such as, in cases of severe disability or after 45 years of contributions. A pension is also possible with 35 years of contributions, but with a reduction of 3.6% per year. However, this reduction can be offset by additional payments.
You can continue working in Germany even when you are retired. Since 2023, there is no longer an earnings limit: you can earn additional income without any restrictions. For each month you work beyond the retirement age, your pension increases by an additional 0.5%, which correponds to 6% more per year.
