Teaching Speaking Skills in the English Classroom
By: Roxana del carmen silva arrieta Didactics of English – UNAD
Introduction
In this presentation, I'll talk about how to teach speaking skills in the English classroom. Speaking is essential for communication, and students need opportunities to practice it in real-life contexts.
Why it is important to talk
Speaking allows students to express their ideas, interact with others, and communicate in real-life situations. It also improves fluency and pronunciation, and builds confidence. That's why I believe speaking should be practiced frequently in every English class.
How to teach to speak (stages)
There are three main stages when teaching speaking:
Pre-speaking: I introduce the topic, teach new vocabulary, and model pronunciation. During speaking: I guide students through communicative tasks like role-plays, interviews, or group discussions. Post-speaking: I give feedback in a supportive way and help students correct common mistakes.
Teaching techniques
Some techniques I would use include:
- Role-playing: Students act out real-life situations.
- Missing Information: Students must speak to exchange missing information.
- Think-Share-Share: Students reflect, talk in pairs, and share ideas.
- Debates: Older students can express their opinions and learn to discuss politely.
These activities create a fun and natural way of speaking English.
Resources I use
Here are some great resources I use to plan conversation lessons:
https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/https://www.fluentu.com YouTube: BBC Learning English, EnglishClass101 ESL conversation websites like https://www.eslfast.com/
These tools help me create dynamic and interactive lessons.
Final Thoughts
To teach speaking successfully, it’s important to create a safe space where students can express themselves freely. As future teachers, we must focus more on communication than on perfection. Encouraging participation and giving positive feedback are key to helping students speak with confidence.
