Early life changes to improve a child’s future

Intervening positively in early life can improve the health and opportunities of the next generation. Prevention is key. But where should the focus be? What actions will have the biggest impacts? The ActEarly Research Consortium was established in 2019 to help find out.

Co-produce research with the public, policy makers, professionals, and those likely to implement the intervention

ActEarly developed the foundations, networks and processes needed to create genuine and creative co-produced research with our public and policy makers. Read the ActEarly Co-production Strategy that has been widely used by government and NHS organisations to find out more.

School Street schemes

ActEarly evaluated School Street schemes in Bradford and showed they work. Following the introduction of School Streets, 60-100% fewer cars are on these streets during restriction times.

Clean Air Zone

The ActEarly evaluation of Bradford’s Clean Air Zone suggests clean air zones may work in reducing pollution-related ill health. Compared to the baseline period pre-intervention, nitrogen dioxide showed a decrease each month in the early stages of the evaluation.

A whole system approach is vital

ActEarly established a research consortium that united broad interdisciplinary expertise including: economics, urban design, transport, education, housing, arts and culture, social justice and welfare. With the public, policy leaders, and practitioners from across two ActEarly sites the team developed shared understanding and priorities. This takes time and effort but supports interdisciplinary wider determinants of health research.

ActEarly Research Consortium

ActEarly aimed to better understand how upstream early life interventions can improve the health and opportunities for children living in poverty. Since 2019 ActEarly has investigated two areas. Both with high levels of child poverty.

  • Bradford, Yorkshire
  • Tower Hamlets, London

Build research capacity in local government

Developing research active local authorities (LAs) is key. This helps LAs develop their own research agendas and use their routine data to support decision making. ActEarly has secured funding for its two LAs so that they can develop the infrastructure they need to use, choose and deliver their own research.

Free school meal auto-enrolment

Around 10% of children eligible for free school meals do not receive them. Poor take up also impacts schools as they receive funding based on free school meal registrations. ActEarly supported the set-up and evaluation of free school meals auto-enrolment. Data showed auto-enrolment works. More children were registered, and millions of pounds of additional funding went to schools.
