Specially Designed Instruction
My secret Recipe for clear universally understood SDI:
- Title it with Where
- Start with "Who is doing What"
- Then link it to the "Why"
- When will be coverd by the frequency
- Re-read: Does it pass the Stranger Test?
Examples:
- Mathematics: Sally's teachers will allow her to use calculator when calculation is not the tested skill, to support math needs.
- ELA: Sally’s LEA will provide an ELA course taught by a special education teacher, to support reading and writing needs.
- All Instructional Settings: Sally's teachers will provide completed (fill in) guided notes to Sally, to support working memory needs.
- Special Educaiton: Sally's Special Education teacher will provide weekly check ins to work on executive functioning skills including planning via zoom.
Make sure that all IEP team members will understand exactly who is doing what, where, and when. The IEP should also link why the SDI is needed.
Data Driven Specially Designed Instruction Examples
RR shows that the Learner Struggles with reading comprehension. Teacher input indicate that she is not completing work. The work she has completed indicates that she is not understanding the material. The learner states that she often shuts down in trying to work through her lessons. When asked about this, she stated that she struggles to read and understand the lessons.
Data Driven Specially Designed Instruction Examples
Learner Struggles with Written Expression per RR and previous IEP. The previous goal is written for 1 paragraph writing sample and data shows struggle with producing this amount of writing. Multiple Teachers Input states that he/she is leaving short answer questions blank. The class has not come across any Essays yet this year. The learner states that he/she struggles to express his/her thoughts and gets frustrated.

Does it pass the stranger test?
Make sure to Write SDI specific to the learner and clear to all IEP team members (including the general education teacher).
Updated SDI:
Current SDI: All Instructional Settings: Teachers will reduce written response length requirements, to support fine motor needs.
General Education Teacher Questions: If I am only asking for 1 sentence is that too much? How short should the essay be?
Short answer questions: Teachers will have no more than 1 short answer questions per assessment, to support fine motor needs. Essays: Teachers will allow shortened essay requirements to no more than 3 paragraphs. OR Assistive Techonology: The LEA will provide Speech to Text, to support essay writting.

Updated SDI:
Current SDI: Assessments: Teachers will provide shorten assessments, for executive functioning needs.
General Education Teacher Questions: If the Test only has 3 questions for everyone, is this short enough? To meet the SDI, I have to make it 2 questions? What if the 3 questions are needed to assess all skills?
Assessments: Teachers will provide shorten assessments by removing questions that assess the same skill, for executive functioning needs. OR Assessments: Teachers will provide assessments that are no longer than 10 questions, for executive functioning needs.

Updated SDI:
Current SDI: Assessments: Teachers will reduce multiple choice answers, to support processing speed and reading needs.
General Education Teacher Questions: Should the General Education Teacher reduce to 2 answers if the whole class has 3? Should the General Education Teacher reduce to 1 answer choice if the question has 2 for all other learners?
Assessments: Teachers will reduce multiple choice answers to no more than 3 choices, to support processing speed and reading needs.
Variants in Edio
The teachers use the SDI as one driving force behind the variants they need to put in place for learners.
What changes can be made for individualization vs the whole class?
- Edio allows course teachers to make individual variants of lesson bundles. The teacher is able to change question types, formatting of the page, insert picture support, add sentence starters, etc.
- Removal of Bundles and removal of Pre-Requsites can only be done for the whole class. Therefore you would have to be creative for an SDI.
What is what in EDIO?
COMPONENT: A piece of the lesson within the bundle (example: questions, text box, image, etc.)
BUNDLE: A section of the lesson.
Variant: A copy of the default bundle that can be altered for learners.
Questions Types
Take a look at a few of the learners assessments.
- Is there a common component or question type that the learner repeatedly struggle with? Could this be due to their disability?
- Can you put some type of support with these questions to aid the learner in doing them? OR Can you replace these question types with another?

Hotspot Answers
Multiple Choice
Hotspot answers are a form of Multiple choice as the learner is selecting part of a picture as the answer. Many skills may effect answering of Multiple Choice such as Working Memory and Reading. If a learner struggles with these think about...
- How many options the learner can handle?/How many distractors the learner can handle?
Audio Answer
Text Answer
Video Answer
When it comes to these three options, think about the learners skills....
- Could something like a sentence starter help generate thoughts and support the learner to finish the response?
- Would the learner benefit from audio or video answers in place of written expressions?
- Is taking away all written expression helping him/her grow? You can remove it when it is not the assessed skill.
Matching List
Categories
These allow learners to sort answers into a category.
These are a traditional matching.
If a learner is commonly missing these questions, think about...
- how many items they can handle matching?
If a learner is commonly missing these questions, think about...
- how many items they can handle sorting?
- does the learner understand that their could be distractors?
Sortable List

You Pick
Pick two will allow the learner to pick which way he/she wants to answer a question. This can work with any question type.
