lunar landings illustrations

Let's look at the objects and illustrations Who might the dream catcher belong to? What might we know about the characters? What do you notice about the twigs and flowers? Why might they be dry? Do the illustrations remind you of anything you have seen or read before? What connections can you make between the objects and the illustrations? Is anything puzzling you? What do you think you know? Why?

Teach

Look at the illustration of the children picking flowers.

lunar landings illustrations

Where might they be going?Who are they picking flowers for? What are they all looking at? What connections can you make between the illustration and the objects? What is your impression of this setting and why? What is your impression of the characters and why? How would you describe the colours that have been chosen and what is the effect?

Teach

Let's look at the title of the Vehicle Text and read this extract from the first page.

lunar landings illustrations

What type of writing is this? What gives you that impression? What might the title and extract mean? What connections can you make between this, the illustrations and the objects? Does it give us any more ideas about where they might be going? Have your ideas about the story changed? Why?

Drama Opportunity: Roleplay and Conscience Alley

Look at the illustrations. Look closely at the girl and her brothers.

What do you notice? How does the use of colour make you feel? What can you tell about the thoughts, feelings and motivations of the different characters?

Teach

Drama Opportunity: Roleplay and Conscience Alley

Children: Get into groups of 4 and act in role as the girl and her three brothers. Act out the two scenes from the illustrations. Consider what they would say and how they would act.

Drama Opportunity: Roleplay and Conscience Alley

Next: Children acting as the girl: form two parallel lines. Children acting as the brothers: walk down the alley between them. As the brothers walk down the alley - each girl must try to persuade them not to enter the palace. Brothers: answer, showing that you can't resist. Try to use the language from the text, including the curse.

I am going to model writing an enchantment curse poem.

Can you see examples of hyphenated words and synonyms & antonyms?

Drama Opportunity: Hot-seating the Girl

Let's re-read the Vehicle Text, then continue up to the page with the illustration of the girl with The Teller from the front cover.

What would the girl be thinking and feeling at this moment?

Take turns to act in role as the girl. The others are to ask her questions, encouraging her to share her thoughts worries and questions at this part of the story.

Teach

Now, let's read the Example Text.

This is a first person narrative. You will be writing your own first person narrative from a different viewpoint.

Teach

Discuss.

Who do you think wrote this narrative? What impressions do you get of them? What more do you learn about the character of the girl from the Example Text?

Teach

Drama Opportunity: Step Inside

Let's explore these three Vehicle Text illustrations.

Visit each illustration and imagine that you can step inside each scene. On Post-its - write words that best describe the atmosphere created by the picture. Consider what you would be able to see, hear, smell and feel inside these pictures and add your notes to the illustrations.

Teach

Drama Opportunity 2: Roleplay - The Girl

Using the same illustrations - imagine being the girl as her brothers go through the door into the palace. Act as the girl pausing in the doorway and show the fear and concern of her character through facial expressions and body language. Say what you think the girl would be thinking or would say aloud. Then add the girl's thoughts and speech in sentences to the illustrations.
