Translating Cooper into ✨vibes✨

S-Delta (SΔ) vs sD

S-Delta (SΔ)

  • A stimulus in the environment that signals that a particular behavior will not be reinforced

Discriminative Stimulus (SD)

  • The presence of an S-Delta decreases the likelihood of the behavior occurring because reinforcement is unavailable
  • An SD is a signal (antecedent stimulus) that tells a person reinforcement is available if they perform a certain behavior
  • S-Delta is critical for teaching individuals to discriminate between situations where reinforcement is available (SD) and situations where it is not (SΔ)
  • When the SD is present and a person responds, they get reinforcement
  • If the SD is absent (SΔ), no reinforcement follows
  • Teaching a learner to differentiate between SD and SΔ helps them make appropriate decisions based on environmental cues
  • Over time, people learn to respond in the presence of the SD because it leads to reinforcement
  • A vending machine with an “Out of Order” sign serves as an S-Delta because attempting to get a snack will not be reinforced
  • This is called stimulus control- the behavior occurs more often when the SD is present
  • Joseph knows his food is ready when he hears the beep from the microwave
  • Opening the microwave is controlled by the SD that signals reinforcement is available
The beep is the SD for getting his food

🚦 SD vs. SΔ
  • SD (Discriminative Stimulus) → A cue that signals reinforcement is available.
  • Effect: Increases the likelihood of behavior.
  • Example: Seeing an "Open" sign on a store → You go inside to buy something. 🏪
  • SΔ (S-Delta) → A cue that signals reinforcement is NOT available.
  • Effect: Decreases the likelihood of behavior.
  • Example: Seeing a "Closed" sign on a store → You don’t try to go in.
✔️ SD: Reinforcement is available! ✔️ SΔ: No reinforcement, so don’t bother!
Gift Giving Guidelines
  • Accepting gifts can create conflicts of interest and impact professional judgment.
  • Behavior analysts must maintain clear boundaries by setting expectations around gift-giving and ensuring that professional relationships are not influenced by financial exchanges.
