DECALOGO: UNA VITA FELICE SECONDO ORAZIO

Quinto Orazio Flacco ci ha donato, nei suoi testi, degli insegnamenti fondamentali che, se seguiti, porteranno alla felicità.

1. Est modus in rebus

"Com’è, o Mecenate, che nessuno vive contento della sorte che la ragione gli ha dato o il caso gli ha gettato davanti?" (vv. 1-2)Nella vita il primo passo da fare per raggiungere la felicità è essere grati ogni giorno per la propria condizione, qualsiasi essa sia.

2. Il seccatore

“non mi dà fastidio che questo sia più ricco di me, o più colto: ognuno ha il suo posto”. (vv. 51-52)Qui Orazio riprende l’insegnamento precedente, affermando come nessuno debba provare invidia per la condizione altrui, giacché ognuno ha il proprio posto nel mondo.

3. Aurea mediocritas

“Rectius vives, neque altum semper urgendo neque, dum procellas cautus horrescis, nimium premendo litus iniquum.” (Se al largo tu non insisti a sfidare il mare e, nel timore di burrasche, per prudenze non rasenti il litorale e le sue insidie, meglio vivrai). (vv. 1-4)Si affronta qui il tema della virtù intesa come giusto mezzo tra eccessi opposti. Il poeta, attraverso l’uso di una metafora, ci invita ad essere saggi, non andando in contro a cose troppo rischiose e allo stesso tempo non vivendo in modo passivo.

4. Il topo di campagna e il topo di città

“quo, bone, dum licet, in rebus iucundis vive batus; vive memor, quam sis aevi brevis.” (perciò, amico mio, finchè t’è concesso, vivi felice in mezzo alle cose gradevoli, vivi ricordando quanto sia breve il tuo tempo). (vv. 95-97) Il poeta in questi versi preannuncia un insegnamento di vita essenziale: bisogna essere consapevoli della caducità umana, facendo tutto il possibile per vivere in mezzo a ciò che ci fa stare bene.

5. Non pensare al futuro

“Quid sit futurum cras fuge quaerere et quem Fors dierum cumque dabit lucro appone.” (cosa domani t’accadrà, non chiedere. Qualsiasi giorno ti darà la sorte, metti a guadagno). (vv. 13-15)E’ inutile pensare assiduamente a cosa ci spetta in futuro. Noi tutti dobbiamo essere contenti di poter vivere un altro giorno, ricordando sempre di essere fortunati di poterlo ancora fare.

6. Ad Albio

“in mezzo a speranza, angosce, paure e rancori, vivi con la certezza che ogni giornata è l’ultima tua luce: e l’ora che verrà dopo, inattesa, ti sarà cara. “ (vv. 14-15)Per concludere, l’ultimo prezioso insegnamento che Quinto Orazio Flacco ci dà è questo: bisogna pensare che ogni giornata sia l’ultima della nostra esistenza, in modo da godersi ancora di più gli inaspettati giorni che verranno dopo.
