“DIY Toolbox”

🛠 Objective: Introduce and practice key vocabulary interactively.

Vocabulary Introduction (15 min)

INTERACTIVE MATCHING

Do the Vocabulary Bank activities on your Student Book.

Step 1

USE IT IN CONTEXT

  • Task: Each student gets a random DIY term (e.g., drill, screw, assemble).
  • They must use it in a sentence related to their life. (Example: Last month, I assembled a bookshelf from IKEA, and it took me hours!)
  • Peer challenge: Other students ask follow-up questions (Was it difficult?, Did you need help?).

Step 2

Home Renovation Clip & Prediction Game

🛠 Objective: Improve listening skills and critical thinking.

Listening activity (15 min)

WATCH AND PREDICT (5 min)

  • Watch a short video (1–2 minutes) of a home renovation before the final reveal.
  • Pause at 0:38
  • Ask: What changes do you think they made?

Step 1

LISTEN & NOTE (10 min)

Info

  • Watch the full video and note:
  • ✅ Three changes made to the house
  • ✅ One tool or material used
  • ✅ One area of the house that looks the most improved—why?
  • 🔄 Pair Discussion: Compare answers and justify choices.

Step 2

“Inspiration or Entertainment?” (Debate)

🛠 Objective: Express opinions and justify arguments..

Speaking Task 1 (10 min)

  • Each team presents their points and rebuts the other side.
  • Encourage use of opinion phrases (In my opinion…, I strongly believe that…).

Debate:

Split students into two groups:

  • Team A: These videos inspire people to improve their homes.
  • Team B: These videos are just entertainment, and most people don’t actually renovate their homes.
  • Give them 5 minutes to come up with three arguments supporting their side.

Setup:

DIY Role-Play: Call the Handyman!

🛠 Objective: Practice real-life conversations using problem-solving skills.

Speaking Task 2 (15 min)

Info

  • One student plays a handyman/woman 🛠 answering a call from a homeowner 🏠 with a DIY problem (e.g., a broken sink, a flickering light, a jammed door).
  • The “customer” must describe the issue, and the handyman suggests solutions using DIY vocabulary.
  • Swap roles after 5 minutes.

Scenario

DIY Challenge: Fix It or Fake It

🛠 Objective: Encourage creativity and problem-solving in teams.

Game (10 min)

  • You'll get a worksheet with three fictional DIY problems (e.g., "Your table wobbles, and you have only tape and a spoon. What do you do?"). Choose one.
  • In pairs, you need to invent a creative solution using at least three vocabulary words from the lesson. You have 5 minutes to brainstorm and present a solution.
  • Present your solution to the class. 1-2 minutes per pair.
  • Class votes for the best, funniest, or most realistic solution!

Instructions:

“My Fixing & DIY Experiences”

🛠 Objective: Reflect on personal experiences and apply new vocabulary.

Final Discussion (15 min)

🏠 Home Renovation Shows:

  • Would you ever renovate your house? What would you change?
  • What’s the biggest home improvement mistake people make?
🔧 Fixing Things:
  • Have you ever fixed something successfully?
  • Have you ever failed at fixing something? What happened?

Questions

Quick Exit Challenge

🛠 Objective: Reinforce learning in a fun way.

Wrap-up (5 min)

  • Each student shares one new word they learned.
  • Challenge: Can you use it in a funny sentence?

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS LESSON!

Thanks!

Three changes made to the house: Kitchen renovation – New cabinets, countertops, and appliances were installed. New flooring – The old floors were removed and replaced with modern hardwood. Bathroom update – The vanity, tiles, and fixtures were upgraded. ✅ One tool or material used: Paint roller – Used to repaint the walls. ✅ One area of the house that looks the most improved—why? The kitchen looks the most improved because it appears brighter, more modern, and spacious after the renovation. The new cabinets and countertops completely transform the space.

1️⃣ Pair Work & Role Assignment (2 minutes) Students pair up: One is the "customer" 🏠 and the other is the "handyman" 🛠. Give them a simple prompt card with different DIY issues (or let them come up with their own). 2️⃣ Speaking Round 1 (5 minutes) The customer describes the problem, adding as much detail as possible. The handyman asks follow-up questions (e.g., "When did the problem start?", "Have you tried anything already?"). The handyman gives advice using at least three DIY vocabulary words. Be creative and even dramatic! 3️⃣ Role Swap & Speaking Round 2 (5 minutes) Students switch roles and repeat with a new problem. 4️⃣ Whole-Class Sharing (3 minutes) A few students can act out their funniest or most creative role-play in front of the class. Quick feedback on vocabulary use and fluency.
