Storytelling

There are two kids in a small village. One of them, named Alex, goes to school every day. He enjoys learning new things and playing with his friends during break time. He knows that education is important and can help him achieve his dreams. The other kid, named Jack, cannot go to school because he has to work to help his family. Every day, he wakes up early and goes to the nearby fields to take care of the crops or helps his father with his work. He wishes he could go to school like Alex but knows that his family needs the extra income.

Alex often shares stories of what he learns at school with Jack. He tells him about how science can help us understand the world around us. He talks about how reading can take you to far-off places and how math can help you solve everyday problems. Jack listens curiously and wishes he could experience these things too. As time goes on, Alex grows more educated and confident, while Jack continues working hard but feels left behind. One day, a new factory opens up in their village, which requires skilled workers. Alex is excited to apply for the job, and because of his education, he gets hired immediately. Jack, on the other hand, is not eligible for the job due to his lack of education.

Class activity 1. Who are the main characters in the story? 2. Why do you think education is important? 3. How does Alex's education help him get a job at the factory? 4. What do you like and/or dislike about the story?
