The IGCSE speaking exam

The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is made up of several sub-topics, which are grouped under five topic areas:

1. Home and abroad
2. Education and employment
3. Personal life and relationships
4. The world around us
5. Social activities, fitness and health

For the speaking examination you complete three tasks: Task A: You choose a photo from any of the sub-topics that can be assessed. The picture must contain people, objects and interactions. Tasks B + C: You answer questions on two other topic areas, both different to the topic of the photo you have chosen for task A. These sub-topics are not assessed in the speaking exam: Services, role models, childhood, weather and climate, accidents, injuries, common ailments and health issues (A3, C3, C5, D2, E4)

Paper 3: Speaking • Externally assessed • 25% of the total International GCSE Content summary The examination is made up of three tasks (A, B and C).

• Task A: Students will answer 5 questions on a picture of their choice (2 to 3 minutes).
• Task B and C: Students will answer questions about two other topics, chosen at random by Pearson, but which will be different from the topic chosen in Task A (3 to 3 minutes thirty each).

Assessment • Total assessment time is 8-10 minutes. • The total number of marks for the paper is 40. No notes are allowed. The students must bring a copy of their chosen photo for task A.

General conversation

Topic A

It is important to prepare for the general conversation on an ongoing basis. This is not something you can leave until the end of year 11 to prepare for. On the following slides you will find questions which you can answer to help you to get ready. It is important to remember that in the exam questions may be worded differently to the questions provided in this list.

• Remember that you will need to answer with detail to all questions. Aim to reply with three to four extended sentences for each question.
• You need to include a range of vocabulary and structures. Try to avoid repeating the same words.
• Show off that you can use tenses. If you are asked a question in the present tense for example what do you usually do at the weekend, you could add what you did last weekend as an extension.
• You are NOT being tested on how well you can recite word for word answers that you have prepared. It is helpful to learn some material so that you can have ideas of sentences to use in the exam. You need to sound spontaneous and avoid hesitating!

Examiner feedback from 2023 relating to general conversation

In Tasks B and C, some candidates used vocabulary in a very repetitive way, mentioning the same activities repeatedly when asked what they liked to do, what they had done recently and what they planned to do in the future. More successful candidates were able to discuss a range of activities and give more distinctively personalised responses. Occasionally, a candidate with a very good command of the language scored less well than expected in terms of Communication and content because they gave brief answers rather than speaking at length with opinions and fully developed justification.
