Superata la soglia, si sentono urla in varie lingue: sono gli Ignavi, coloro che non hanno preso posizione nella vita. Nemmeno l'inferno li vuole. Infatti ci troviamo nel Vestibolo. Essi stanno assieme ad angeli che non si sono schierati con nessuno nella battaglia contro Lucifero. Per la legge del contrappasso, in questo caso di contrasto, sono destinati a seguire un'insegna che gira su sé stessa per l'eternità, tormentati da vespe e altri insetti. Tra gli ignavi Dante riconosce"colui che per viltà fece il gran rifiuto", ovvero Celestino V che dopo 4 mesi rinunciò al ruolo di papa.

CARONTEDante, attraversato il vestibolo, arriva sulle rive del fiume Acheronte, dove vede arrivare Caronte, il traghettatore infernale. Il demone con il remo colpisce le anime e le porta nell'inferno. Caronte non vuole traghettare Dante, perché si tratta di un vivo e perché non è destinato alla dannazione. Virgilio risponde che Dio gli ha detto di accompagnare Dante verso l'inferno e di farlo uscire. Alla fine del canto si racconta che avviene un terremoto, cade un grande fulmine sulla quella zona infernale e Dante sviene.

MINOSSEUsciti dal limbo Dante e Virgilio entrano nel secondo cerchio. Sulla soglia c'è il demone Minosse che ascolta le confessioni delle anime dannate e attorciglia la propria coda al proprio corpo tante volte quanti i cerchi che i dannati devono discendere. Ma perché Minosse? Perché fu un sovrano giusto , perciò ha l'onore di giudicare le anime dannate e spedirle in base alla loro pena in un determinato girone. Quando si accorge che Dante è vivo lo rampogna ma per fortuna arriva Virgilio che gli permette di passare.

Il conte Ugolino della Gherardesca

Dante lo colloca tra i traditori della patria nell'Antenòra, la seconda zona del IX Cerchio dell'Inferno in cui i dannati sono imprigionati nel ghiaccio.
