A. School uniforms have always been an issue. People still have arguments for and against wearing them. The major point "for" school uniforms is that they unite students and show which school they go to. This is very widespread in the UK, where nearly every school has a particular design of the uniform. B. We should also remember that school uniforms are practical clothes. They are made from harmless materials and your body feels comfortable. Most of the uniforms are designed in a way that allows students to take part in different school activities. They are usually appropriate for classroom lessons, outdoor activities and for doing sports. C. However, lots of children say that school uniforms are uncomfortable to wear. Some children are allergic or sensitive to certain materials. Others do not like buttons or zippers. Many girls, for example, do not like to wear skirts or dresses, which most girls' uniforms require. Of course, no uniform can suit all children. D. School uniforms level students from different backgrounds and families. By wearing the same clothes, you will never tell how wealthy a student's family is. So, it helps to prevent students from poor families from bullying. On the other hand, school uniforms stop children from being creative and showing their individuality in clothes. E. Students' safety is top priority for most schools. There have been cases of intruders coming to schools for various reasons. Even though such cases are rare, school authorities also say that school uniforms are important for safety reasons. Uniforms help teachers and school staff to distinguish between students and strangers and to prevent bad things from happening.

A. Some French education specialists were worried that young people in France were not creative and innovative enough for the modern world. They blame their school system because it mostly concentrates on marks and grades. This reduces the ability of school children to produce new ideas. A special week-long festival that was organised showed the participants how nice it was to get things wrong and make mistakes. B. Most people believe in success. It is important in sport, politics and business. Take our education systems: they are based on the idea of encouraging people to be successful. Success at exams means entrance to university. Success at university often means a good job. People who work hard often get higher positions, and so on. C. Success models often teach us to follow rules and procedures. This encourages people to stick to old ideas. Specialists say that we should value our mistakes and failure too. On the other hand, people who take risks often think creatively and come up with new and sometimes impossible ideas. And they are told they are wrong. In our fast-changing world, this is not good. D. Successful employers are sure that if you criticise employees' good ideas, they will give up. One of them gives an example. If you send a group of explorers to a new land to find mineral resources and they can't, you should not blame them for this. Otherwise, they will quit. E. This also concerns learning a foreign language. Sometimes you have to take risks, because then it becomes difficult to communicate. When you are trying to talk to a foreigner, and they don't understand you, then you should try to find a different way of saying what you want to say. So making a mistake sometimes means making progress!

A. Our modern world is changing so quickly, that we have to adapt to new conditions. And this may lead to stress. Most people believe that stress is bad for us. If you search for 'reduce stress levels' on the Internet, you will see millions of hits. Articles on healthy living often tell us how to reduce our stress levels and give us "proven" advice. But are the points actually helpful? B. There is a special technique called the "Social Stress Test". It suggests that stress is only harmful if you believe that it is. An experiment was conducted a few years ago. Two groups of people were asked, for example, to do a maths test while their 'teacher' distracted them by shouting "Faster! Faster! Not very good!". C. Before taking the test, one group knew nothing about the experiment. The other group was told that stress is good for them and such symptoms as dry mouth and fast heart beating show that the body prepares them for a challenge. Interestingly enough, the results were quite different. D. The people who did not know anything about the experiment showed signs of damage to the blood vessels around the heart. Their stress during the test was at high level. The second group, on the other hand, showed no signs of stress at all. These results were confirmed by other tests. It seems that the effects of stress depend on what you believe about stress! E. Such experiments are useful for our understanding of stress. They prove that you should accept any stressful situation without too much worrying. Remember, that if you are sure that stress does harm, then it will definitely make things worse. Try to relax and take difficulties as challenges that will make you stronger and more experienced for the future.

A. Psychologists say there are two types of people: those who love shopping and those who hate it. The first group includes shopaholics that cannot live without buying anything. They shop offline and online and spend a lot of money on the things they actually do not need. Some people prefer window-shopping: they love looking at goods in shop windows, and this is more than enough for them. B. Online shopping is becoming more popular every year. According to a recent report, over half of Americans with Internet access prefer shopping online. Just 1% say they have never shopped online. Experts agree that people spend on average around $100 per online order. The most common types of goods bought online include books, electronics, clothes and accessories, household appliances and goods. C. During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, online sales increased all over the world. People on lockdown shopped online due to the fact that offline shopping was limited in most countries. Large chains of supermarkets had more online orders of food and household goods than before. Thus, experts say that shopping online helped to reduce the number of infected people during the pandemic. D. Offline shopping is still more appealing for those who either do not want to shop online (or cannot for some reason), or prefer to look at the product closely before buying it. This often concerns clothes that most people want to try on before the purchase. Offline shopping for clothes saves them time from returning the articles that do not fit back to the shop. E. A lot of people say that online shopping is best for books, magazines and journals. There are samples of books available online, so you can look through the edition before buyingit. Most online shops have gift certificates on sale. Such certificates have become a good present for online or offline shoppers who can choose and buy the item they like in the shop on their own.

A. People often travel to other countries on holiday or on business. There are traditions and rules in foreign countries that we should be aware of. When you meet someone for the first time in Russia, America or Canada, it is polite to shake hands firmly while looking them straight in the eyes. In most Asian countries you should avoid physical contact and eye contact. For example, you should bow in Japan. B. Clothes are important for many nations. Some countries have strict rules that must be followed not to offend citizens. In Asian and Muslim countries, you shouldn't reveal the body, especially if you are a woman. In Japan, you should take off your shoes when entering a house. The shoes have to be placed neatly together facing the door you came in. This is also true in China, Korea, Thailand, and Iran. C. What about mealtimes? In some countries lunch is the biggest meal of the day. In Italy, Spain, or Latin America it can last for hours. Because of this, many people have a light breakfast and a late dinner. In Asian countries lunch is often the time to relax and socialise. In Greece, for example, dinner is eaten late and it lasts for hours with plenty of tasty dishes. D. Businesspeople often cooperate with foreign companies to develop or extend their businesses. Business cards are important for first meetings everywhere. They often have two sides with the information in two languages. In many countries, working hours are from 9.00 or 10.00 am to 5.00 or 6.00 pm. In Asia, you will most likely be invited to a restaurant after work and you should not refuse even if you are tired. E. There are some other rules in certain countries that you should remember to be polite. In India and the Middle East, you must never use your left hand for greeting, eating or drinking. Most South Americans and Mexicans do not keep social distance and like to stand very close to you when they are talking. Do not back away. In Ireland, you may be asked to sing after a social event.
