Causes

The U.S. was scared that if the Soviet Union passed communism down to Vietnam, it would spread around Asia, causing a "domino effect" and would affect how much the U.S earns profit and spreads Soviet Union Influence

Proxy War:Vietnam

Communism

  • North and South Vietnam (where the war took place)
  • Soviet Union + China (The communist party the U.S was scared of)
  • U.S (the ones that helped South Vietnam to battle Communism)
Proxy War:Vietnam

Key Players

The presidant that started Vietnamization, Richard Nixon

U.S Involvement

At first, the U.S sent money and resources to SV to help them battle NV for containment. Later, the NV attacked U.S ships, and they started sending troops over to help with more military operations. Eventually, this proxy war took a toll on the U.S, which is when they began "Vietnamization." It essentially means to slowly withdraw American troops and leave SV on its own.

Proxy war:Vietnam
They supported finacially and sent troops

The U.S spent a lot of money supporting SV. Since the president did not raise taxes, it weakened the U.S economy.

Debt (short)

The U.S went into isolationism and did not enter any affairs—the U.S.'s reputation as a powerhouse diminished.

Isolationism (long)

Many people during the war protested against it, this led to a sour relationship between the people and the president. Multiple people who returned from the war came back with PTSD and suffered greatly. Most did not return to the U.S. We lost over 58,000 lives

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Short + Long

Was it beneficial?

Since we lost many lives and failed at our goal, I would not say this war was beneficial; the cons outweigh the pros. We lost money and humbled ourselves. But a pro is that we can learn from our mistakes.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE
No

The U.S helps Ukraine to defend itself against Russia to strengthen allied relationships with the Euro-Atlantic community. We help them by demining mines that Russia put, help enhance security services against Russia, and send troops to Ukraine. I think these situations are similar since the U.S is helping out with troops and resources. In addition, Trump has paused aid to Ukraine due to his recent debate with the president. seems as if we are starting to withdraw and leave it to Ukraine just like we tried doing to Vietnam. .
