Review: The passive

Start

In active sentences, the important thing is WHO performs the action. When do we use the passive voice?

1. When we are more interested in the person or thing RECEIVING the action than in who performs it.

The road is being repaired. In which sentence do we want to highlight the play and in which the author?

  • Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare.
  • Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet.

2. To make the tone more impersonal.

A new rule has been introduced.

3. To avoid responsibility or sound more authoritative.

Your flight has been cancelled. Mistakes were made.

4. To express general truths.

Chocolate eggs are made with milk and cocoa.

5. When the "agent" is obvious or unimportant.

He was arrested last night > It is not necessary to say "The police arrested him".

How to form the passive voice

To transform an active sentence into a passive one:1. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.2. The verb to be is used in the same tense as the main verb of the active sentence.3. The past participle of the main verb is used.4. If necessary, "by" + the agent (who performed the action) is added.

My father cleaned the kitchen yesterday

The kitchen was cleaned by my father yesterday.

Common mistakes:

1. Not paying attention to irregular verbs: The class was been teached by a new teacher or The class was being taught by a new teacher. 2. Confusing "by" and "for" in the passive voice: This song was written for Beyonce or This song was written by Beyonce.

exercise

Transform these sentences into the passive voice:

Passive voice with two objects

When a sentence has 2 objects (direct and indirect), we can form 2 different passive structures. Active: They gave her a book Passive:

  • She was given a book
  • A book was given to her

CAUSATIVE

We use the causative form when we want to say that someone else (usually a professional) performed an action for us. Structure: GET / HAVE + SOMETHING + PAST PARTICIPLE

What is the difference between...

I cut my hair and I got my hair cut. John painted his house last summer and John had his house painted last summer.

exercise
