Affirmative Action
An active effort to improve employment/educational opportunities for members of minority groups and women. Began as a government remedy to discrimination African Americans faced and consists of policies that improve opportunities. Eventually expanded to include women, Native Americans, Hispanics.
The term “affirmative action” was first used in Executive Order 10925 by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to address employment discrimination.
Why Were These Policies Introduced? Combat systemic inequalities and ensure fair access. Promote representation of marginalized groups in education and employment. Encourage inclusive work and learning environments. Intended Goals: Reduce gaps in access and achievement. Enhance diversity and inclusion. Create a fairer society by addressing past injustices.

Conservative, Liberal or Neutral?
Under DEI’s rubric, "Equity" isn’t a tool used to level the playing field, but a means of restitution to atone for past systemic injustices. "Inclusion" isn’t an invitation for all to participate, but a way of excluding those with "privilege,"i.e. White people (especially men), and most recently Jews.
"Diversity, equity and inclusion is all about not just having a multiplicity of genders or skin colors. It’s about encouraging a diversity of thought, talent and creativity. And that’s something from which every workplace and every classroom can benefit."
We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.
