(541 million years ago - Present)
(4.6 - 4 billion years ago)
CAENOZOIC
PALAELOZOIC
MESOZOIC
(65 million years ago -present)
(250 million years ago -65)
(541 million years ago -250)
The first ICE AGE occurred.
PALAEOGENE
Nummulites are the most typical fossils.
Appearance of primates.
Atmosphere rich in nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour, formed by the activity of volcanoes.
CARBONIFEROUS
Abundance of ferns and gymnosperms.
Winged insects and reptiles appeared.
CRETACEOUS
Flowering plants, known as angiosperms, appeared.
The first snakes developed from lizards.
A MASS EXTINCTIONS which wiped out 75% of existing species (including the majority of dinosaurs), occurred.
Appearance of eukaryotic cells.
DEVONIAN
Animals began to colonise land, starting with insects and amphibians.
At the end of this era, the continents collided again, producing another supercontinent, Pangaea.
The water vapour condensed and precipitated forming the hydrosphere.
TRIASSIC
Dinosaurs appeared and dominated land ecosystems.
QUATERNARY
The fauna and flora were very similar to today´s varieties.
Hominids evolved to become the current species Homo sapiens.
NEOGENE
Mammals became the dominant group in land ecosystems.
The first hominids appeared.
The first multicellular heterotrophic organisms evolved (invertebrates such as worms, coelenterates and arthropods)
Appearance of prokaryotic cells (bacteria).
Appearance of autotrophic cells (cyanobacteria)
CAMBRIAN
The invertebrates continued to develop and animals with two shells as brachiopods proliferated.
JURASSIC
Diversification of large reptiles such as dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs and pterosaurs.
The first mammals appeared.
Ammonites (type of molluscs) are the most typical fossils
Solidification of the Earth´s crust.
SILURIAN
Development of molluscs like nautiluses and arthropods like trilobites.
The first fish with jaws appeared.
The first land plants appeared (FERNS)
PERMIAN
The greatest MASS EXTINCTIONS occurred, wiping out more than 90% of existing especies
Pangaea broke up and divided into two large continents: Gondwana to the south and Laurasia to the north.
The continents moved towards their current positions
ORDOVICIAN
The first vertebrates appeared: jawless fish known as ostracoderms.
One of the five historic MASS EXTINCTIONS occurred at the end of this period.
