"Can" is a modal verb used to express abilities, permissions, or possibilities in the present or future. It does not change its form and is followed by a base verb without "to".

Ability: Shows someone is capable of doing something. Example: I can swim. Permission: Used to ask for or give informal permission. Example: Can I leave now? Possibility: Refers to a possible situation. Example: It can rain tomorrow.
