The Three Trees

Nicola Lucente - Saverio Vaglico

The three trees

Rembrandt van Rijn’s The Three Trees (1643) is one of the most famous landscape etchings in art history. The artwork captures a dramatic rural scene featuring three trees standing on a hill, surrounded by an intense, stormy atmosphere. The composition is rich in contrasts, with dark clouds in the sky, distant figures in the background, and a strong interplay of light and shadow. The trees, particularly the central one, appear as the focal point, emphasizing their strength and isolation within nature.

The technique

This masterpiece was created using the etching technique, a printmaking process that became highly popular during the 17th century. The method involves covering a metal plate, usually copper, with a thin layer of wax or resin. The artist then uses a sharp tool to scratch the design into the wax, exposing the metal underneath. Once the drawing is complete, the plate is submerged in acid, which bites into the exposed areas, creating grooves that will later hold the ink. After cleaning the plate, ink is applied, filling the incised lines, and the excess is wiped away. Finally, the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the image.

Etching

Nicola Lucente - Saverio Vaglico

Rembrandt was a master of etching, and The Three Trees demonstrates his ability to manipulate light and texture. He combined etching with drypoint and engraving, adding fine details and deeper shadows. His technique allows for a remarkable range of tones, from the darkest storm clouds to the softest highlights on the landscape. This print showcases not only his technical skills but also his talent for creating dramatic and emotional compositions. Through his mastery of etching, Rembrandt transformed simple landscapes into powerful, atmospheric scenes that continue to captivate viewers today.

Description

Nicola Lucente - Saverio Vaglico

The subject is a summer storm moving into the distance. On the left, masses of black clouds pass over the city, while heavy rain continues to fall over the surrounding countryside. On the right, however, the sky is serene and so bright as to make the foreground seem immersed in darkness. This is populated by single narrative episodes: two lovers are hidden behind the bushes and further on, a fisherman in the company of a woman. On the right, against the bright horizon, we see travellers on a cart and an artist, sitting down and enjoying the spectacular view offered by the sun as it comes back to shine over the countryside.
