Consiste in una navetta (oggetto in legno dalla forma affusolata), che contiene una spoletta, in cui è avvolto il filato. La navetta viene lanciata da una parte all'altra della catena di fili (ordito) da un apposito congegno posizionato sul portapettine (cassa battente) di un telaio da tessitura Passa quindi per il varco aperto tra i fili di ordito pari e di quello dispari, srotolando il filato della trama. Grazie a questa struttura si utilizza una sola mano, in modo che l'altra rimane sul pettine per la battuta.

L'inventore, nato nel 1704 e morto nel 1780, è noto per la creazione della spoletta volante. John Kay è conosciuto anche per l'invenzione di una macchina per battere la lana.

Fu inventata e brevettata nel 1733 per consentire la tessitura automatica. La spoletta volante influenzava la seconda fase di lavorazione (tessitura), quindi iniziò ad essere usata solo dopo la creazione del filatoio meccanico (1763).

Da cosa era sostituito prima

Prima, l'operaio, doveva mettere, con una mano, la navetta nel passo, spingendola con forza fino a che non arrivava all'altro lato, dove la prendeva con l'altra mano.
