The Empire State Building remained the tallest building in the world from its construction in 1930 until 1970: it was then surpassed by the World Trade Center's towers. It is now the 10th tallest skyscraper in the United States.
At the top of the Empire State Building are several antennas for broadcast stations. This part of the building was added after it was built in 1930.
The lobby is made of bronze and different kinds of marble. At the back is an aluminium relief of the skyscraper with the sun behind the top floors and rays radiating from it above the city.
Several floors have setbacks*, allowing the sunlight to reach the streets and illuminate the top floors' interior.It also gets these floors away from the noisy streets. The higher the floor is, the more expensive it is to buy / rent.
* retraits
The 80th, 86th and 102nd floors contain observatories. Visitors can take an elevator to get there and admire the view from the top of New York City. The one on the 86th floor even has an open-air outdoor deck!
The main entrance is flanked by two columns topped with eagle statues. The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States of America: it represents strength, courage, freedom and immortality.
