Charles Dickens was born on 7th February 1812. His father worked in an office and the family had a happy life. Charles was an intelligent boy and a good student. Unfortunately, his family had money problems and his father went to prison when he was 12 years old. So Charles left school and worked in a factory to earn money. The conditions in the factory were very bad and he worked for 12 hours a day. After three years, he finished his education and became a clerk. He started working for a newspaper at the age of 16 and soon became a journalist. He started writing creative short stories for magazines and his books were not only a form of entertainement, but also a way to educate readers. He never forgot the experience of working in the factory and he wrote about it in his novels. He was worried about poverty and injustice, but he
didn't attack the society of his time. At the end of the books he expressed hope for the improvement of the condition of the poor, thanks to less egoism and hypocrisy. His books were firstly pubblished part-by-part in weekly magazins, so he could see the reaction of his readers before he contnued writing his story. He understood how to hold reader's attention and often ended his chapters with suspense. He created some of the most known characters in English literature: they are vivid and full of colour, sometimes even caricatures. The good people are always rewarded and the bad are punished. He travelled in America, England, Switzerland and Italy, where he gave public readings of his books. He did not stop writing until the day of his death. He died in 1870 and his tomb is in Westminster Abbey.
