Vocabulary: compound meter, compounded beat, subdivision, meter, odd meter, simple meter, duple meter, triple meter, quadruple meter

Learners Can:

define compound meter distinguish the difference between simple and compound meter compose in compound meter

Quarter Note Triplet

The quarter note triplet is made up of quarter notes and divided three ways across the half note.

Eighth Note Triplet

The eighth note triplet is made up of eighth notes and divided three ways across the quarter note.

Compose a 2 measure rhythm sequence using a triplet AND a dotted rhythm

Perform the Rhythm Below – Write in the counts then clap it.

Review

Subdivision

  • Subdivision occurs when the beat is divided
  • Half notes can be divided into two quarter notes
  • Quarter notes can be divided into two eighth notes
  • Eighth notes can be divided into two sixteenth notes
  • Dotted half notes can be divided into two dotted quarter notes or six eighth notes
  • Dotted quarter notes can be divided into three eighth notes

Review: Meter

Meter is the grouping of rhythmic patterns or consistencies within a piece of music. The meter is the organization and grouping of the music itself through measures, bar lines, and note pairings. Remember that time signature calculates how to organize and count music. The time signature is the written way to describe and categorize a meter.

    Review: Meter

There are strong beats and weak beats. Meter is defined through grouping in two ways:

    • within a measure
    • within a beat

    Groupings in a Beat

    • meter is defined through the groupings in a beat
    • correlates to the bottom number in a time signature.

Groupings in a BEAT: Simple Meter

Simple meter occurs when the beat is divided or grouped into twos. Common time signatures for simple meter are 2/2 and 4/4

Groupings in a BEAT: Compound Meter

Compound meter occurs when the beat is divided or grouped into threes Common time signatures for compound meter are 6/8 and 9/8

Groupings in a Measure: Odd Meter

Odd meter occurs when the beat division is varied, such as in the example with groupings of both threes and twos. Common time signatures for odd meter are seven-eight and five-eight.

    Groupings in a Measure: Duple

    Groupings in a Measure: Triple

    Groupings in a Measure: Quadruple

    Meter, In Summary:

The TOP NUMBER of a time signature tells you how meter is grouped in MEASURES: either duple, triple, or quadruple The BOTTOM NUMBER of a time signature tells you how meter is grouped in BEATS: simple, compound, or odd

Match the type of meter to its description

    Simple

    the beat division is varied

    Compound

the beat is divided or grouped into twos

    Odd

the beat is divided or grouped into threes

    Compound Meter: 6/8

6/8 time signature has six eighth notes per measure.

    6/8 Time Signature

    Compound Meter: Eighth Note Beat

    Compound Meter: Rhythm Tree

    Dotted Quarter Note: Compound

One compounded beatFeeling a beat larger than the listed beat value in the time signature

    Dotted Half Note: Compound

    • 2 compounded beats
    • 6 eighth notes beats

    Dotted Eighth Note: Compound

Makes a DUPLET when paired with another dotted eighth½ of the compounded beat (dotted quarter note)1.5 eighth notes beats

    What type of meter?

Write in the counts, then perform the Rhythm

    Compose a two-measure sequence in 6/8

What time signature for each & why?

    Summary:
