Dental benefits aren’t a part of TRICARE’s medical coverage, but there are options for beneficiaries and their families. TRICARE offers dental coverage through:

  • The Active Duty Dental Program
  • The TRICARE Dental Program
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management offers dental coverage to retirees and their families, certain survivors, and Medal of Honor recipients and their families through:
  • The Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program

Who's eligible

Dental Plan

  • Active duty service members
  • National Guard and Reserve members who are:
    • On continuous active duty for more than 30 days
    • On federally funded orders for more than 30 days
    • Moved directly from federal orders to state orders. This is when performing state disaster response duty as if on active duty orders for more than 30 days.
  • Early Activation members
    • You’re a Reserve Component member issued delayed-effective-date active duty orders for more than 30 days in support of a contingency operation or preplanned mission.
  • Personnel in the Transitional Assistance Management Program
    • You’re a Reserve Component member discharged after more than 30 days in support of a contingency operation or preplanned mission.
  • Personnel with an approved Line of Duty determination
    • You’re a Reserve Component member who sustains or worsens an injury, illness, or disease while serving on active duty for 30 days or less.
  • Wounded Warriors
    • You’re an active duty service member getting inpatient care at a Department of Veteran Affairs hospital.
    • You’re an active duty service member identified as a wounded warrior and getting inpatient or outpatient care at a VA hospital.

Fluoride Preparations

TRICARE doesn’t cover fluoride preparations.

Does TRICARE Cover Braces? No, TRICARE medical plans don’t cover braces. However, you may be able to get coverage through other programs: TRICARE Dental Program (TDP)You can buy dental coverage through the TRICARE Dental Program, which does cover orthodontic braces for certain beneficiaries: Active Duty Service Members

Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP)If you’re enrolled in FEDVIP dental coverage, contact your dental plan directly to find out if braces are covered.

VWisdom Teeth Removal

TRICARE may cover services related to wisdom teeth removal through one of TRICARE’s dental plans:

  • TRICARE Dental Program
Certain TRICARE beneficiaries may be eligible to purchase dental coverage through the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program. Learn more about FEDVIP.

TRICARE may cover treatment for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, also known as acute myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome.Coverage applies only when the condition is considered a medical problem, not a dental one—typically when it involves immediate relief of pain.

Orthodontia

Orthodontic treatments—such as braces and retainers—are only covered by TRICARE when they are medically necessary to correct a severe congenital abnormality, such as a cleft palate. Covered: Correction of severe congenital conditions (e.g., cleft palate) Not Covered by TRICARE Medical: Braces or retainers for cosmetic or routine orthodontic purposesOther orthodontic services may be covered under your TRICARE dental plan.

Dental X-rays may be covered under a dental plan:

Oral Surgery

Oral Surgery Coverage Under TRICARETRICARE covers the following oral surgery procedures as medical care. These may be performed by physicians or dentists.if braces are covered.

Note: Medically necessary means the service is appropriate, reasonable, and adequate for your condition and relates to the treatment of an injury or illness.

What is Adjunctive Dental Care? Adjunctive dental care is dental treatment needed as part of treating a medical condition, injury, or disease. TRICARE may cover this type of care, but only when it's medically necessary and directly connected to a covered medical issue.
