1. CHARACTERISTICS
Tidal energy is a renewable source of energy that works thanks to the tides of the water. Some characteristics of it are:- It is very green. It doesn't produce any pollution or
gases which could affect to the atmosphere.- It is very predictable. As we can predict the tides
of the water, we can also predict how many energy we will have.- The bad thing is the high cost of the constructions.
2. TIDAL BARRAGES
A tidal barrage is the name of the construction that produces tidal energy. It works like this:- A tidal barrage blocks the water, forcing it to
pass below.- Down there's a turbine that rotates thanks to
the water passing through there.- As the turbine rotates, it transforms the kinetic energy to other types of energy, but that will be explained by Arnau.
3. ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS
Electricity generated by generator
Transmitted by transmission line
Controlled by embarkment
Strikes Turbine
Tidal Waves
Potential energy
Kinetic energy
Electrical energy
4. ADVANTAGES VS DISADVANTAGES
4.1. ADVANTAGES
- Lower enviromental impact
- Produce little waste
- Decreases energy dependence in other countries
4.2. DISADVANTAGES
- Only efficient in certain places
withlarge tidal changes of more of 5 m
- Sometimes very tiny enviromental impact
5. BARRAGES IN SPAIN & EUROPE
In Spain, we have the Mutriku tidal power plant in the Basque Country. This is a wave power plant, where the arrival of a wave and its entry into a chamber spins a turbine, which helps to turn an alternator that produces electrical energy.
The European countries that currently have installed capacity to produce tidal energy are: France, the United Kingdom and Norway.
6. TIDAL ENERGY RISKS
Tidal power can damage marine life, as tidal turbines with their rotating blades may lead to deaths of living creatures in a sea.
Tidal energy can also impact the quality of water and sediment processes.
It can also alter the fauna and flora of marine ecosystems.
