HOW: DEFINE AND PRACTICE

+ TIPS & TRICKS

The strategy in this model is called Define and Practice. It addresses words that are the most important in the text, but not words that you identify for explicit instruction. To do this, prepare in advance a quick vocabulary script to use when you encounter the word, including a brief review of the definition and follow-up questions for practice.

HOW: PRONOUNCE

+ TIPS & TRICKS

Sometimes students only need to hear a word pronounced to know what it is. This strategy reinforces decoding and provides pronunciations for words that students may have heard but not seen (e.g. colonel, dough, cough).

IMPLICIT VOCABULARY: WHAT

Implicit vocabulary words are tier 3 words that are “domain-specific” and are not generally used between content curricular areas. Implicit vocabulary instruction is the teaching of words during reading to support students’ comprehension of the text.

IMPLICIT VOCABULARY: WHY

In our lesson plans, vocabulary words are identified, but you need to take your students into account when determining which are the best fit to teach implicitly. Understanding the ways to introduce these words to our students ensures that we are building their breadth of vocabulary and their comprehension of the text.

HOW: DROP IT IN

+ tips & tricks

This strategy is called Drop It In. It addresses words that are crucial for student comprehension but are not necessarily worthy of further application. For example, when encountering the word distinguish for the first time, you might say, "to distinguish means to tell apart as different."
